Joe Wheeler

@siam Seen this? Personally I am glad that he owned his mistake and is committed to learn from it.
I'm pleased you're glad mate. I think the relationship between Joe and Himeno was in jeopardy and needed a racial reset. I'm pleased to see his commitment to repairing their relationship which was unexpectedly thrust into turmoil mid evening good Friday in Christchurch. I'm also proud to be conversing with a voice that made the world less racist.
Thank you for your service good man.

@dolamite What a twat. That's racism from Joe Wheeler. He adds nothing but cringe.
Oh fuck off. You really get that offended when @nta mocks your kiwi accent? It's not fucken racism, don't be ridiculous.
I don't, but perhaps because there isn't a wave of anti-Kiwi violence going on anywhere at the moment.
Utterly naive (being charitable) from Josef Wheeler and IMHO racist.
Perhaps he was trying to be funny with his "joke" from the 1970s.
There's a wave of anti-Japanese accent violence going on somewhere? Werr I nevel.

Joe Wheeler is such a dumb fuck he got the stereotype completely wrong anyway. Japanese are usually stereotyped for pronouncing L as R.. not the opposite as Wheeler was implying e.g that joke..
What do Japanese do when they have an erection?
Vote.
The Japanese ra ri ru re ro phonemic sound is actually a different sound to ra re ri ro ru sound (English) or la le li lo lu sound (English) as the Japanese ra ri ru re ro combines aspects from both.
Edit: In other words, the joke works both ways, whether it is in good taste or bad.
Edit edit: For me, I thought that was really unclassy (I know that isn't a word).
English is used by far more people as an additional language than a first language, which is fucking lucky for kiwis, and I'm not sure why anyone would think it is a good idea to make fun of someone who is speaking in their second or third language - whilst on broadcast television representing NZ rugby.

Bit close to home this issue, daughter, half-Japanese, in a NZ high school after being raised mostly in Japan. Anyway, if she speaks, some people seem to think it is funny to laugh at her accent and mimic her. No problem for her, she understands she is going to meet some people she needs to avoid (being identified as Asian in NZ is an instant asshole detector...).
Anyway, the lack of self-reflection on how the Kiwi accent sounds is quite remarkable. -

I understand the joke as one of my Japanese friends used to like making these jokes when we were out on the piss, but on International TV I thought that was really classless, but I don't find that guy funny at any other time anyway I guess (Fumi was funny, but I think everyone thought that it was Wheeler who was funny).

Huh? I don't follow. Was Wheeler only allowed to make a shit joke if he immediately follows it up with self reflection? That's a bit weird.
-
@gt12 I don't mind Wheeler. As far from a racist as you'll ever get I reckon but jeez, keep that joke to take the piss out of your close Japanese friend(s) in the right context. Don't say it on TV and encourage arsewipes to do the same!

Mr Bones, you make it sound like you never self reflect after you make a shit joke? Say it ain't so!
For the sake of transparency, I don't go in for self-reflection in case I find out I am actually a vampire.
Regards Wheeler, it is just not on, kono imo! (That does mean potato head, right?) But at least he had the guts to apologize. And Himeno sounds a good bloke.

@old-samurai-jack said in Crusaders v Highlanders (2 April 2021):
@bones Point was that everyone has an accent and it only sounds weird to people who aren't used to it.
I'm pretty surprised that's a point you feel needs to be made. It may be hard to believe (case in point) but we're actually all adults here. Do you really think there's large swathes of people that don't know that?
On a sociolinguistic level, people who take the piss out of someone's accent are usually unaware of their own.
Well there you go, that answers my question. If that's legit I'm genuinely astounded. I don't think I would know anyone that doesn't realise they have an accent, that's really bizarre.
-
@nostrildamus my range of ugly jokes, shit hair jokes and small penis jokes is beyond the realms of comprehension.
I know, I know, it's probably racist to make jokes like that but at least I self reflect.
-
@old-samurai-jack said in Crusaders v Highlanders (2 April 2021):
@bones Eh? Hold on, I explained the point because you wrote, " I don't follow". Otherwise, I inferred something that was obvious. You want a senseless argument?
I was probably unclear - I mean when/how did you expect Wheeler to self reflect? If he makes a shit joke about the Japanese accent, does he have to immediately follow it with one about his own accent?

I've met people who don't think they have accents, everybody else does. One did not think Manhattan was an island either (she was American).

@bones Mmm, OK....., please explain Wheeler's joke and why he thought it was funny. The answer to your questions should be in your response.
Wait... people who make jokes about people's fat bodies don't realise they have a body?

I missed what Wheeler said, must of been when I left room for minute. And perhaps he needs to apologise, but did anyone have a go at Aussie commentators for say you lot over the dutch etc? Happens a lot, never worried me and like what Wheeler did, just in my opinion show the person struggles to be funny.
-
He's just not funny. Wheeler is made out by many to be this hilarious larrikin but he's simply another bad example of the shallow talent pool in our small nation.
Racist though? Nah. Just a poor attempt at an accent mock, which is as common a joke as anything and pretty harmless in isolation.
