@mariner4life Yeah, pretty embarassing to just ignore an elbow to the throat.

@kirwan Yeah Franks got away with clocking Parsons during a game that same year too.

The Thug Brothers (Franks) and Moody all like/liked to dish it and all seem to escape the condemnation that other players get.

But you make my point for me, we are far more likely to get punished by a NH ref for acts of thuggery than a high tackle.

To be honest - I'd be pretty doubtful if that was borne out by statistics.

The three red cards the ABs have had in recent times were SBW, Scott Barrett and Ofa. I don't think any of them were for out and out thuggery.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/99278416/all-blacks-see-plenty-of-yellow-and-a-bit-of-red-in-2017

The graph in this article shows we got 56 cards 2008-2017 - the only red one was SBW's - so it seems unlikely that any were for serious thuggery. Plenty will have been for accumulated offences.

@chris-b Been more than a few games where we have said "lucky the ref didn't see Moody doing that".

Just addressing Stargazers point about NH refs, more likely to get done on stuff lke that he's been lucky to get away with.

But I guess that doesn't exist because he wasn't penalised for it?

@kirwan The Citing Commissioners tend to pick thuggery up later though. I think Moody might have been done retrospectively for that video you posted. But, I don't think there's a lot of it.

Overwhelmingly, I think we are more likely to suffer a card for a mistimed tackle than for thuggery - because you see the first pretty regularly and the second almost never.

No doubt the Refs not just in SR will now be aware and watching Ofa and his clean out technique. After him doing the same in the AB game and getting carded he has reminded every Ref again that there is a problem there.I would expect the spotlight to stay on Ofa for a while.

One was for a cleanout and another was for a high tackle, so not the same actions.

I don't remember saying that I asked the question is that 2 technical issues to fix for Ofa because if he cleans out like that again he is dicing with a long suspension.

Good quote from https://tiponrugby.substack.com/p/free-eight. interesting comment on Rieko:

While the Blues couldn’t finish on top against the Crusaders at Eden Park on Sunday, midfielder Rieko Ioane produced another impactful performance with ball in hand — as well as a couple of crucial defensive interventions. Throughout his Super Rugby career to date, his efforts against the 10-time champions have been stellar: he has made breaks as often in his 7 games against the Crusaders (once every 5.4 carries) as in his 55 games against all other opponents (once every 5.3), and beaten defenders in red and black (once every 2.0 carries) more frequently than others (3.2). What Scott Robertson’s side have done well is control how often he can release the ball out of contact; he has offloaded on only 5.1% of his carries against the Crusaders, compared to 9.6% against the Blues’ other opponents. His performance last weekend was largely in line with these trends: while he couldn’t complete an offload on his 14 carries, his footwork — which helped him beat 5 defenders and make 1 clean break — caused the Crusaders problems.

Maybe but a fraction higher and bye bye it would be v very interesting if he does it this week and glances the head again to quote the Sanzar Muppets what the reaction would be.

Are you worried about Scott Barrett who got red carded for a much worse clean out?

Ofa was only a few inches off a great clearout. It’s a non issue.

I’m more worried about his tackling tbh, he puts in massive hits but those are easy to get wrong and always look worse in slow motion.

@nzzp 14 carries without an offload isn't what you want to see from a centre. If Reiko wants to be a centre long term, especially at the next level then he needs to improve in that area of his game.

He's obviously got all the x factor and line-breaking ability in the world, but that doesn't always help when he doesn't distribute, ultimately preventing his side from turning pressure into points.

@canes4life yep. Crusaders did really well to shut that down.

That said, he's in what game 3 of year 2 of his centre career? Plenty of time, and the physical attributes are all there. Hopefully he keeps on learning and builds his distribution. I think distribution can be taught if players are willing

@nzzp certainly, I mean we saw Nonu struggle early on and look how he turned out. Once Ioane adds that string to his bow I think the Blues will flourish, espeically with the likes of Clarke ranging wide.

if we were playing Australian sides, folk would be saying he's a lock for teh ABs.

Crusaders defence is remarkable to see live. Theya re so hard to break down.

@nzzp Crusaders are a different beast atm, and it's even harder when you're getting ball on the back foot.
