30 For 30: What Carter Lost
I love the movie Friday Night Lights, i have watched it shitloads. So when i saw an episode about the team that beat them in the Championship Game (it was actually the semi, but you know, artistic license) i thought i would give it a crack.
Holy shit what a story. When the State Championship was done half way through the show i wondered where the fuck we were going (the story up to there was bad enough), but the bit after? The weirdest shit. And really sad actually. I wouldn't mind my sons watching it to see the impact a bad decision can have on your entire life. (not to underplay how bad a decision this was)
It was really interesting to see what Carter was as a school compared to how it was portrayed in movie mentioned above. That must be incredibly tough for those kids (now adults) to see. And there are a couple of other threads in that movie that i now feel a little uncomfortable about.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball. The story of Bing Russell's (Kurt's dad) minor league baseball team in Portland during the 70s.
Kurt played for the team for a while as well.

So sad, I really feel for her. I adorrrred Britney when I was an early teen, this made me both nostalgic and heartbroken.
For those who don't know she is living under conservatorship, her dad has made all decisions for her for over 10yrs (around that maybe more) and she now wants someone else to take this role, or perhaps not be under it at all, recently courts have now granted a trust Co conservatorship as Britney requested. Then there's the #freebritney movement, some of those are as nutty as the Elisa Lam Web sleuths, well they all think the dad is some demon stealing her money and not letting live her life.
It's very clear she has suffered some extreme episode of mental illness and perhaps continues to so she probably needs someone to help her, especially with finances. It's always sad to see stars fall. I really want to dig deep into her mental health, I want diagnosis and interviews etc but this doc is more about her journey to this point and it's non of my business to be fair, that's part of the problem isn't it, no privacy. She definitely needs a voice, especially today when mental health is something that is spoken about a lot, she's claimed she wants transparency for her fans but her dad is blocking it as he wants privacy.

I watched this last night. Firstly, superb summary above.
Secondly, a few things stuck out for me.
- Yanks have absolutely no high ground to stand on about Meghans supposedly bad treatment. They fucking destroyed Britney.
- Alot of people seem to have pretty set opinions on things based on not a lot. The guy who spoke about the analysis of Britney's instagram posts was absolutely spot on. People go in with a position and regardless of what it is, its' reinforced by what they read
- The analysis of her by some is mental illness territory. People doing podcasts to discuss her instagram posts?? Dedicating a whole hour long cast because she did a smiley ( ; and ) )instead of an emoji?? WTF is wrong with you!!
- It's obviously written by people trying to get the conservatorship thing shut down ... who all have absolutely no clue around what is really going.
What became obvious to me is that Spears is a pretty genuine person who became super famous, super quick and subsequently thousands of people used that to make themselves rich - either directly or indirectly. And none of them have a single regret. Included in this are the makers of the documentary.
It's shitty and sad.

Latest Last Chance U is pretty good. We've moved to Basketball this time. I'm only 3 episodes in, but these kids don't seem as tragic as the Football kids. And definitely better placed than the Southern football kids.
I like the Coach.

Finished the series, loved it. The coach is so passionate about his kids, the kids are hard rocks but they have kind hearts. The basketball footage is great

@majorrage I really enjoyed the doco, found it fascinating.
I think there's a broader discussion as well around the 2000-2010 period (roughly) where everyone lost their minds about how we treat young female celebrities.
The gossip mags were still going strong, but the growth of the internet saw things really escalate. Sites like Perez Hilton, the start of TMZ, reality TV, it all just mixed together to create something that looks horrible in hindsight.
Britney was a victim of it, but so was Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus. All were let down by those close to them, but they were also completely ill-equipped to deal with the level of scrutiny they received.

Said to my wife, the only downside is those fucking coaches making me feel like such a self-absorbed piston wristed gibbon. The HC makes something like $45k and is totally invested in those kids. No idea what the assistant makes, but he seems to care just as much.

The assistant was on SFA, they were basically on to single income the wife said. And the coach in the wheelchair, all of them love those kids. When the coach keeps yelling "I'm not giving up on you!!!!!" was spine tingling.

So emotional when the coaches were in tears about the cancelled state tourney. Not for themselves, but for the kids

Yeah it's painful viewing in hindsight. Mike Munro from our 60 Minutes was among the worst. How did they think that asking that was appropriate?
