As far I can tell Sky Sports in the UK (now owned by Comcast) aren't that interested. Other broadcasters though aren't going to give them free advertising by buying something called Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa.

Something of a disaster for NZR. All this talk about building a global brand and unlocking the supporter base and for the first time since the 1990s NZ Super Rugby games won't be broadcast live in the UK.

@sparky I hear you bro and I know you have a penchant for the dramatic but I recall it not being super available when I got here in the late naughties...

@bones At least some Super Rugby has been available in the UK since the days of it being Super Tens back in 1993 or 1994. Think it was a weekly highlights show back then. Perhaps there were games available as delayed transition after that. I remember for sure watching the 2000 Super Rugby Final live in the UK with a lot of students in a bar in Cambridge.

I have a feeling that for most of the noughties there were a couple of live Super Games a week, highlights of the rest.

That's not right. For example the RC is Investec in NZ, something else in Oz, another in SA, and different in Argentina. And called just plain RC elsewhere. Same for super rugby

If i remember correctly foxtel didn't get the rights to the Ab's when they played Ireland in the US and so NZR was able to stream the games on their website for a small fee, $10 maybe

anyone think theres any chance of that? or similar

Plenty of emotion in this one.

Any reason the kiwi team and the Aussie not involved in a derby couldn’t face off? That gives 5 instead of 4 matches each week and adds a bit of variety. I suppose there are the by weeks and the Covid bubbles.

@billy-tell If a Kiwi team or an Aussie team has to cross borders to play that game, the team (re-)entering NZ has to go into managed isolation for 14 days. At the moment, the Covid situation doesn't allow it.

The bye is indeed necessary because of player wellfare.

Just watched a Christian Cullen doco on sky. Great to look back and see the best fullback I've ever seen in his prime. The latter part regarding his non selection for the 2003 RWC made me despise Mitch all over again

Now that the beginning of SRA for 2021 is upon us, I wish we'd somehow managed to scratch together a sixth team so we could have a third game each week.

Not viable at all @shark - the games are too fast and physical.

The counter argument is looking at the Six Nations. Having a sixth team and a third game really hasn't added much.

Obviously over time you'd imagine a 6th NZ franchise would be strong but I think initially they would be weak and would play that 'Italy' role (especially if they were rushed through to play in 2021).

@kiwimurph i think we'd have to do something crazy like the five franchises could only protect 5-8 players from the current squads and the new team would get first crack at picking the same number from those left, and then all teams can fill their rosters from those left after that

making a sixth team from only those not wanted by the first 5 is always going to impossible

a bit silly but actually could have made of the off season interesting

The two teams that can challenge the Crusaders for the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa title

The Crusaders are firm favourites to clinch a fifth straight title, but, in the eyes of two Super Rugby stalwarts, they won't go through the season unchallenged.

Are the Crusaders keeping the horses and the Vangelis tune, or is that gone too??

@billy-tell I assume it will be the same as in 2020: horses and riders dressed in the colours of the Crusaders' provinces.
