Going by his comments it sounds like complications from an earlier surgery?

A quick check shows that McWhannell had surgery in June last year - patellar tendon debridement. Recovery is usually 6 months.

Seventy nine. Four games for Waikato in 1964.
Didn’t have medial ligaments in those days.

The Chiefs are set to revert to a co-captaincy model for their 2021 Super Rugby season in order to ease the workload on All Blacks skipper Sam Cane.

After eight years of co-captains, Warren Gatland decided to move away from it in his first year in charge in 2020, when he gave Cane full responsibility last season.

But, with Cane having since been elevated to the All Blacks captaincy as well, interim Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan told Stuff they had to be wary of not overburdening their talismanic openside flanker, so are looking to promote another leader.

With it common for a forward-back split in the co-captaincy, All Blacks Brad Weber and Anton Lienert-Brown loom as prime candidates, though McMillan even noted they may look at someone who’s not even a regular starter, to have someone who’s likely always on the park at the end of a game.

A decision will still likely be a few weeks away, with February 1 the date Super Rugby clubs welcome back their All Blacks, who are allowed to play 40 minutes of one pre-season match.

@Yeetyaah heard talk of a 'game of 3 halves' between the North Island teams?

It’s amazing how many players get injured in pre season training.I am an old codger who played in the sixties and I can’t recall losing any players before the season even started.Training of course is on a different level now,but what are the events leading to these injuries. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last.Sad really.

that was when people used to train on soft grass.. when rugby was a winter sport.. and everyone half the size

I've lost count on how many operations McWhannell has had in the last 3 years.

I suppose that means van den Hoven would come into the main squad.

who would win an operation count out of him and Tucker?!

my late former boss played for Qld back in the day. He used to laugh at my preseason regime. In his day preseason games were preseason. Now we had preseason training to get ready for preseason games. At one point i was training 11 months of the year, compared to his 6.

Has Catley and Gordon Brunskill had us running around the Cambridge Racecourse.Don’t recall the grass being that soft, but the alcohol the night before sitting pretty heavy!Running around the block on the road another less than soft surface.Playing a ten aside tournament at Easter in Ngahinapouri another gut buster.

    Ah Kuoi
    Josh Lord
    Laghlan McWhannell
    Tupou Vaa'i

Shame we lost Allardice and Retallick won't be back till next year. Look very weak in second row, even if I am a fan of Vaa'i.

Is Mcwhannell confirmed out long term or just a few weeks for healing and rehab? Presume Brown will cover and Finau and Van den Hoven are rather good cover from wtg. Not so horribly gloomy in my view.
