Best ever looseforward trio IMO. Particularly the 2010 version. (The 2011 version was ever so slightly less powerful due to high ankle strains, broken feet etc., but made up for it by sheer awesomeness.)

Im still glad I didn't put the $1000 I was going to on him one year I think 2011 to win world player of the year when he was the best player going. They gave it to Dusitore (sp) who hardly played anything outside of the world cup and even there only played a couple of the games really well.
He nearly made his career blemish free off the field...nearly!

Kaino was as good as a rugby player on field as McCaw, but McCaw did it over a longer period, and crucially, was a once in a generation leader.
Read was our best number 8 of the professional era (excluding Zinzan Brooke who was the best I've ever seen). Not as good as the other two, was a pretty crappy captain, and should've retired at the end of 2017.

He's obviously not, but he was probably missed more than both guys post-2015. Obviously Cane and Ardie are not Richie, and Beauden is not DC. But the gap between the multitude if guys who've played 6 post-2015 and Kaino is far greater than in those positions.

I agree with this, except he kept playing until 2018 without announcing his intentions. I wonder whether we'd have Luatua here if he had announced that he was leaving post Lions 2017.
I also wonder whether the AB coaches thought they might be able to sneak out another year after the cheating scandal was done, but by that time in 2018 at the end of Super rugby he was seen to be past it (as it turned out, that's probably not the case at all given that Squire didn't even fucking make it to the cup).
That Lions series really fucked us up - Kaino (and others) was hanging on for it and the ABs coaches weren't looking to 2019 to a sufficient degree.
I'm not sure what I'm trying to say with this post, expect I feel that he hung on slightly too long - similar to Read. In comparison, both Richie and Carter bowed out at just the right time to cement their legacies.

Silver Fern readers with an eye for the truly great own-thread moments in the game will well remember the estimable Jegga nonchalantly mentioning taking breakfast with Kaino , Damien MacKenzie , Liam Squire and Joe Moody in Wellington on August 27 four and a bit years ago. Andrew Mehrtens was there too, at another table. Just like Jegga. 😁
Jerome was special, big, he'd hit them as hard as Jerry Collins when he was in the mood and his last few years were outstanding.
It's a shame that the big dope couldn't keep it in his pants, and stand back from Tara Pokarier, just at the time his manager could have been pushing his good looks and Greek god body at marketing agencies as a perfect advertising platform for clothes fashion and such. These blokes get the very best education and insight into the value of personal discipline and integrity - that news really disappointed me.

@Mick-Gold-Coast-QLD great sentiments mick. Agree he was a fine player but a person should never be salaciously shamed for picking up a consensual shag. No one knows other people's personal lives, only the envious (or women) judge, and his rugby prowess resigns the tabloid gossip to a "meh" for mine.
Won us a world cup, among other great achievements in black.

But a noticeable gap ahead of Read IMO
Maybe not peak Read, who was incredible, but in my eyes he is on the team sheet first.
Peak Read (2013) and Peak Kaino (2011) were equivalent, but Average Kaino much better than Average Read IMO.
Read had a Ponting over the last 3-4yrs of his career .....i.e. test average from 60 down to 52 or something
