Jerome Kaino to retire

My favourite modern day All Black. I've always felt he's been a bit underrated by the NZ public in comparison to the big Cantabs (Richie, DC and Read before his reputation slipped a bit in the last year or so) but I think his absence from the ABs and the struggle to find a long term 6 has helped increase his standing.
Kaino was awesome, but he's not on Richie or DC's level.

But a noticeable gap ahead of Read IMO

Maybe not peak Read, who was incredible, but in my eyes he is on the team sheet first.

That is true, he did such a good job of healing the wounds when Jerry didn’t get selected after 07.....

to think we had peak Richie, Kaino and Read at 1 point...insane quality loose trio there.
@MN5 read an article about Jerry post RWC 2007, that game took something out of him.

I said in comparison to the Cantabs, and then your post above just confirmed it.
If he was behind those two there was a finger nail it and for a good three years he was our best AB consistently while those two were playing.
Yes, this is the hill I'm willing to die on.

Agreed. I too thought he was awesome. V1 and V2 also true. Rated him highly, but below a couple of others in different positions as you said.
The problem is with the word "underrated". WTF does that mean? The guy didn't get fawned over like some others?
That doesn't mean his efforts and achievements weren't noticed. Being the best six in the world for a considerable period works for me. -

@Nepia Just overlapped posts and get what you were saying now.
It's the bloody Cantab's fault again.
It's always the Cantab's fault, the Sydney lockdown/my Xmas trip ruined = likely Cantab super spreaders living on the Northern Beaches who also follow Manly.

No doubt bringing their Merivale swingers parties to their new haunts in the Northern beaches, although the other guests were confused when mid-thrust the Cantabs were asking their new sexual partners which of the four ships their ancestors arrived on.

Best ever looseforward trio IMO. Particularly the 2010 version. (The 2011 version was ever so slightly less powerful due to high ankle strains, broken feet etc., but made up for it by sheer awesomeness.)

Agreed. In form and fit I can't think of a better lineup. To have that matched with DC, Ma'a and Conrad. What great times

Im still glad I didn't put the $1000 I was going to on him one year I think 2011 to win world player of the year when he was the best player going. They gave it to Dusitore (sp) who hardly played anything outside of the world cup and even there only played a couple of the games really well.
He nearly made his career blemish free off the field...nearly!
On the field one of my favourites.

Kaino was robbed

Kaino was as good as a rugby player on field as McCaw, but McCaw did it over a longer period, and crucially, was a once in a generation leader.
Read was our best number 8 of the professional era (excluding Zinzan Brooke who was the best I've ever seen). Not as good as the other two, was a pretty crappy captain, and should've retired at the end of 2017.

He's obviously not, but he was probably missed more than both guys post-2015. Obviously Cane and Ardie are not Richie, and Beauden is not DC. But the gap between the multitude if guys who've played 6 post-2015 and Kaino is far greater than in those positions.
