Best Test XI - POLL - Batsmen
-
@Snowy sheesh, it seems I shouldn’t have gone off grid playing golf today. All hell has broken loose.
Apart from the openers, the 4 batters are our 4 best batters, regardless of where they batted in the batting order. They’ll all be so good they can slot in anywhere in the top 6.

John R Reid anyone? Before my time but his reputation put him up there with the best when we were mud.
And that Cape Town test post Tangiwai with the bandaged head.
Bowled a bit too.
No
Illuminating post.
Now that we've established I got my 50s era batsmen muxed ip do you want to elaborate on why John R Reid is so definitely rejected?

Initials aren't CC

JF Reid - number 3 with a good average in the 80s.
AH Jones - also a number 3 with a good average in the 80s.
Generally best results aginst the Asian teams and spin. Not so good against pace (except for that 1985 test in Brissy in conjunction with MDC's 188).

Correct. To elaborate further their batting stats are pretty similar but one of them took an absolute shitload more wickets at a better average.

Thought this was the batsman's thread

One of the best players of his era and one of our greatest, but not too sure he'd keep the likes of Crowe, Kane etc out of the best Test XI however.
Would be one of my first names in any limited over best XI, though - even if he was just before limited over cricket arrived.

This all makes perfect and logical sense

You're like Wayne Barnes, just go missing for large parts of the match and let the players do whatever they like.
It seems that I did have the rules basically correct though.

Generally accepted that his style of play would have made him a star in the shorter formats.
In some ways he was a cricketer before his time. ODI and T20 cricket would have been his forte: an attacking batsmen also capable of playing long, retrenching innings; an attacking bowler with many variations, getting through his overs quickly, always in the batsman’s face; an astute and forthright captain; a superb fielder, ready to take the gloves if the keeper was injured. He’d have loved the IPL, and the crowds would have loved him.

I'm certainly not doubting any of what is being said but you'd be pretty brave to pick him ahead of any of our recent stars.

Always wondered what the other John Reid (J F) would have achieved is he hadn't given up the game.
A Test average of 46 and 6 Tons in 19 Tests is pretty impressive.

Impossible to say.
I remember Mark Greatbatch started with a hiss and a roar but retired with an average of 30.

I thought we were picking the Black Caps not the Black Sox
Probably best a discussion for the Grumpy Old Man thread...

Let's whack Sutcliffe in there.
And Mr Ryder. Better average than a lot of those nominated with only 2 not outs -
