@taniwharugby There doesn't seem to be a real ceremony, this year. Just reading up a list of winners, and talking with a few of them.

@Bovidae As far as players are concerned, I only think Sam Cane is a real surprise. For both awards.

They spelt Sam Whitelock wrong. Seriously though Cane was solid but he wasn’t the player of the year. Whitelock or Smith for me.

@Stargazer I have no problem with Cane winning the AB player of the year. Our MOTM polls probably reflect that.

In other categories, I would have chosen some different winners.

Fine with Cane as the Tremain winner because, after a lot of people questioning him getting the captaincy, he put in some warrior-like performances. Agree that the POTY should have gone to Smith.

Best NZ's men Rugby Head Coach by a country mile. Several country miles ahead of the incumbent AB coach.

Sam Cane is the first name on the AB team sheet IMHO. I thought he was outstanding in the first three AB games this year. A deserved player of the year.

$64,000 question in NZ Rugby is whether this guy can reproduce his outstanding play for the Crusaders week-in-week-out consistently for the ABs. Seems to go to pieces at Test level if the opposition deny him space.

But he couldn't if Smith didn't win the Tom French or AB player of the year.
