Was thinking about this the other day actually.
He’s currently the 2nd best test bowler in the world, 2nd! It’s few and far between that we get our guys ranked that high. Anyone who says he shouldn’t be considered as one of our best ever has rocks in their head.
IMO it doesn’t matter if he got there by bowling pretty outswinging deliveries that hit the top of off or if he’s got there by bowling balls aimed at the Adam’s apple, results are results.
And Timmy up to 4 in the rankings.... I’m not reading much from his haters at the moment.
His batting has got better...

Somehow survive R J Hadlee and Trent Boult's opening spell, and then Wagner turns up to try and remove your head from your shoulders until Hadlee returns.
That’s if Boult is playing ahead of Bond. Longevity vs brilliance
you play all 3 in my side. I don't need Wags, i've got Dan to tie up an end. Be nice to see him bowl when all he has to do is attack.

unapologetically style is everything to me. CdGH opening the bowling in whites for NZ makes my skin crawl.

@mariner4life I'll see your big man and raise a current Black Caps selector. That really was embarrassing

We talk about left arm right arm bats being hard to bowl against but imagine a unit of Boult and Hadlee together! You would earn every run!

Who? Larsen?
Can't say I recall him opening, but there was a period we were so bad I stopped watching. I think Glenn Turner's 1996 team had both Larsen and Vaughan in the same test X1. -

@Rapido Big Gav the renowned tearaway opening quick opened in the Windies in the mid 90's. It might have been the tour Turner coached with the walk outs etc. We did have a number out injured IIRC but definitely Larsen opened our "attack"
Yes, I looked it up.
Although, interestingly did have the tall, fastish Robert Kennedy bowling 3rd or 4th seamer. But he was raw and obviously management didn't think he was currently up to it.Coincidentally, I have just recently read Turner's book on those 2 year's as coach.
Cairns' had had a tantrum/ self-diagnosed injury and ruled himself out, Nash was sulking and blaming others and maybe injured, he also didn't rate Morrison by this stage, but he was playing.

that, more than anything, has tainted my opinion of him forever. i know @MN5 would turn for him, but i can't even include him in any "best of" sides now because in my eyes he has become a tainted quitter.

@mariner4life who troubled the best batsman inn the world last year, in his home conditions? The Wags.
Dead. Set. Legend.
yes. but it's a damning statement when the dude bowling 130km bouncers at guys for 15 overs straight is in our all time best attack.
Why is that a problem? The all time Australia XI has a guy landing 130km balls just sort of a length with limited ability to swing the ball.

Turner insinuates that Cairns tried to rule himself out of the world cup quarter final v Australia in 1996. Writes Cairns said he had an injury and stormed out of training without reporting to physio first etc. He did play.
Insinuates that he didn't truely believe in his abilities in pressure situations and tried to find ways out of them.
Not mentioned in the book, as before this timeframe, but there are similar rumours about him missing a test on the Australia 93/94 tour. Toe injury I think, and Australians mocked/sledged him in the next match. Where the false choo choo sledge rumours come from.
Cairns did at least eventually become a good player. Actually a great player.
But ....

Glen McGrath makes it for landing the ball on a 20c piece over and over again
Wags is more landing on a frisbee
Also, Josh Hazlewood is better than Glen McGrath. what? come at me

I'm assuming this is the second test of the series after Bond took 4/28 with the new ball in the first innings of the first test before breaking down?

Kane in doubt for the second test depending on how his wife's pregnancy goes - she is due shortly.
the fuck Kane?

I don't know. It is the accuracy of Wagner's bouncer's that is what makes him so good. Relentless at the arm pit / rib cage. That you have to decide to attack, defend or avoid. ball after ball for long spells.
Not the easily avoidable but sexier ones at the helmet.
