The latest is that SA Rugby have not yet confirmed their participation.

The Springboks will begin their defence of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship with an away match against Argentina – in Brisbane – before a ‘home’ game against the Wallabies in Sydney, it was announced overnight as SANZAAR unveiled the competition fixtures.

South Africa’s participation in the event still has to be confirmed but SANZAAR has revealed the intended playing schedule for the 12-match, six-week tournament, which will take place in Australia (in Brisbane, Newcastle and Sydney) between 7 November and 12 December.

The Boks are scheduled to play back-to-back matches against New Zealand – with an away game in Sydney before ‘hosting’ the same opponents in Newcastle – before the tournament returns to Sydney for the final two rounds.

South Africa’s participation remains conditional on the relaxation of the government’s current ban on international sporting participation and the outcome of assessments of high performance and player welfare issues.

SANZAAR explained the incoming teams (Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa) would be required to observe all health regulations around their squads as imposed by the New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland governments.

The teams will be kept separate by operating within a ‘bubble’ during this period with all teams operating in clean environments controlled by NSW police. The wellness of the squads will be continually monitored in line with NSW Health requirements.

@Bovidae Yeah, and that's from the official SA rugby website, so no media rumour. Interesting.

As I said, it works just as well if not better, a day or two later when you can have everybody there and families aren't divided between venues.

Yes. We often did this and they were the best. Chose the 23rd or boxing day, or 27th. Got all the cousins there instead of only some. They were the best Xmases. Almost all NZ extended families with members spread over the country surely experience this.

I do think actual Xmas day is good to be there when you have really young kids, and you can still pull off the whole santa thing.

"On numerous occasions, for the record, going back to August 27, we at RA said we would be prepared to entertain a five-week competition but that was knocked on the head by New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina," McLennan said.

Australia then voted with New Zealand to play six matches in five weeks at a September 17 meeting.

That was also knocked on the head by South Africa and Argentina, leaving the trans- Ta$man nations with little choice but to agree to the current competition format.

NZR says it never agreed to the six-week format but McLennan has board minutes which prove otherwise.

"I've seen board minutes from September 17 where the six-week competition was signed off," McLennan said.

"There's a lot of he said, she said. It's a bit messy, I have to say."

The "messy" nature of the disagreement has seen the relationship deteriorate rapidly.

"There is respect there but the relationship is at probably the lowest ebb it's ever been at," McLennan said.

"But I'm trying my hardest to fix that over time."

The reporting over here is really beating on NZR, and from what I've read on both sides of the ditch, this looks like an own goal.

It certainly was a mistake to trust RA.

I dont get what RA are supposed to have done wrong. All accounts are they agreed to NZRs request even after NZR turned down the exact same when the shoe was on the other foot.

Frankly NZR have acted like right dicks since the start of the year.

@Derpus I think that last bit is untrue. In good ol' dirty politics fashion, the RA CEO "played" things via the Aussie media because that suited his agenda. NZR has said very little from the start. They made one statement about the Aratipu Report, and what was said in that statement was subsequently totally twisted by the Aussie media, and by McLennan to suit his own purposes. The media believed what he said or used it because of its high clickbait potential. From then on, McLennan and the media (esp in Australia) have just continued to lay all the blame on NZR.

Have NZR made mistakes? No doubt. But RA/McLennan have played and are playing a political game, and it has to be said, he's pretty good at it.

It was a pretty fucking presumptuous and arrogant statement - we invite Ozzie teams to apply for our Super Rugby, and we will decide if they are good enough!

@Machpants As I said, NZR has made mistakes, but I think most of the things we think we know, are actually coming from the media. I don't trust the media (Aussie and Kiwi) to give an accurate reflection of what was said or how it happened.

Did they? According to Robinson they had agreed to it.

@Stargazer fair enough. Ill caveat by saying 'from what we know' they've been right dicks. Maybe they are angels behind the scenes. Doubt it.

Or maybe the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

@taniwharugby I've had a look at the corresponding story over on SMH (https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/leaked-meeting-minutes-show-nz-agreed-to-six-week-rugby-championship-20200930-p560r0.html) and there's no linki or quote of these minutes. That's before we acknowledge that you can write anything in minutes...
