Well, Goon HS ran CBHS close but dipped out, and STAC managed to fend off the Syrups in the battle of the Range Rovers vs the ML350s. Friendly results see St Bedes back on the fringe of the top 4 and they have a pretty easy run home. But CBHS and STAC have a significant break on the balance now and are certainty the teams to beat.

@Magic65 From an earlier article on Stuff.
NZSSC eligibility regulations are not defined by year level (or returning) in school sport, they are defined by age. Most 1st XV competitions require students to be under 18 on January 1 in the year of competition. However, some have the ability to exercise special dispensations for "a small number" of under 19-year-old players, Carnachan said. And those dispensations are exactly what several Auckland school boys will be seeking if they do not get to showcase what they can do in year 13.
The likes of Highlanders lock Pari Pari Parkinson and NZ Sevens star Rocky Khan both repeated year 13 and played 1st XV again, before going on to play professionally.
-
@Bovidae Surely if the guys are good enough to play professionally in the next few years they will already have been on the radar thus no need to repeat year 13. If not then they will just have to "Conrad Smith" their way up the pecking order. It can still be done coming up through Colts or Premier Club rugby for those not in the system when they leave school.

was PPP still under 19s when he repeated Y13? Hate to think St Kents got dispensation to play a 6'8" 19 yr old

I agree, but I suppose from the perception of the kids, and their parents, they feel like it is a missed opportunity. The 5 SR franchises usually have U18 teams and training camps for players to showcase their talent which hasn't happened either AFAIK. The best players will already be signed to provincial academies.
@Magic65 I don't know. You would have to check PPP's age in the year he repeated.
-
Wouldn't a guy have to fail the year in order to repeat, in order to be able to play 1st XV rugby? And wouldn't that in some way be policed, so a bright kid who's a good footy player couldn't just tank for the hell of it and stay on another year? And then if you're that kid, why on Earth would you wanna be the doofus in a school uniform hanging out with all your mates in mufti after school?

CBHS beat Goon HS today, and STAC beat St Bedes in a close one. The two best sides will now meet in the final. St Bede's only really notable win this season was against Christ's around midway through the season before Christ's form really dropped away.
CBHS have improved as the season has gone on while STAC declined during and after a 9/9 start but have regained some form latterly. STAC beat CBHS in a TV game which acted as the curtain-raiser to a Crusaders game, so this should be a ding dong battle.
