@R-L I'm surprised it took a Brit so long to find a thread discussing the weather.

@Kruse So am I right that in an ideal world at this stage you would rather be in London? If so why don't you take the job, put your stuff in the UK in storage and see how things pan out?

One thing you do not want to do is spend $20K moving shit down here only to discover that you don't like it and as soon as you can you spend another $15K moving it back again.

I really like Wellington and I do think the bad weather thing is a bit over exaggerated (although the only time I went to a test at The Basin the queue for the hot coffee was 10 times as long as the beer tent it was so cold) but coming from London it is going to seem pretty small.

when you ship make sure you get a comprehensive insurance deal and read the fine print. I guess you are going to have to rely on people in the ULK a lot?

Yeah - a lot of that is what I'm thinking.
I am definitely going to need to rely on people in UK a lot... which I feel bad about. I've got people I can trust - it's just going to be asking a massive favour of them. And they've offered to store my stuff for a while... but I think they're underestimating just how much space is needed... I don't have any furniture worth keeping... but just boxes and boxes of crap.
But yeah - I'm certainly considering the option of just leaving it all over there for a short time at least.
Wellington - I've lived there before... and I'm the same as you - I don't recall the climate difference being that large.

@Kruse We moved up from the down Wellington way to Auckland, and even got the wife to admit the weather up here was much nicer. Storms hit much harder down there, and it's much colder.

Flip side is it rains a lot in Auckland. But no earthquakes (another factor in moving. Wife worked in the hospital down there and saw the emergency plans. That place is fucked if they ever get a decent quake. Have an emergency kit with water in it...).

Both places are nice to live though.

When we moved down from London we got a half container, cost a fortune in 2008. Imagine it would be even more in the current climate, so storage is not a bad option until likely cost increases return to normal.

As for internet, I rely on fibre for work and Orcon have been extremely reliable and the speed is epic.

If you've been through a Rotorua winter Wellington's weather won't faze you at all @Kruse. I reckon you can't beat Wellington on a good day - but there are some shockers as well.

Auckland's climate has its downsides too. Spring is fucking windy. Temperatures only really take off over Xmas and it never gets that hot. If you like the water though its brilliant. Plenty of great beaches, Northlands very accessible and there's the Gulf.

Entertainment wise I would have given it to Wtn with Courtney/ Cuba but Akl has improved in that regard enormously in the last decade. It's ten years since North Wharf opened and from the Harbour Bridge to Beach Road the place has changed dramatically.

Yeah - I was shocked at how I didn't cope particularly well with the Rotorua winter. After 12 feckin' years in London, and having only recently ridden a bike through snow over the Tibetan Plateau. Nope - it's Rotorua where I really felt the cold.
Northland - yeah, that was one thing which nearly swayed me towards AKL. Having that on my doorstep, with the bike... would have been great. I've never ridden Northland... I was hoping to get it done this year, but the lockdown kicked in just around the time I might have done it. On the other hand... Wellington has access to the South Island... which isn't too shabby for some bike ridin'.

Because it’s a weird thread anyway. Have the kittens here at work. About to take them around the corner to be desexed. Should be a mundane task but feels anything but. Didn’t expect to be doing all this, bringing them back to work feels like a full circle.
Anyway just another weird chapter in 2020..
