@shark Tom Parsons is a very good lock at NPC level, who was in the Hurricanes wider training squad, last year. Quite unlucky not to get a SR contract, the last few years. With his 1.98m he adds some valuable height and he has a huge workrate. Also has a nose for the try line. Unfortunately, on the contracting front, his age (he's almost 30) is going to count against him now.
I watch a fair bit of NPC and I couldn't tell you who he plays for.
That he's almost 30 and he's only just breaking into an injury depleted and already thin SR squad, indicates he isn't all that flash.

The Highlanders also confirmed that Hawke's Bay lock Tom Parsons will remain with the squad for the rest of the season, replacing Josh Dickson.
Former Hurricanes lock Geoff Cridge had been with the squad last week on a short-term basis.

so...anyone think we'll see NMS after the bye?...OR...do we think Hunt might have got his eye in and has earned a start at 15, assuming Iaone comes in to 10

He might get overshadowed by the signing of Michael Fatialofa.

@shark Yes. And the "has done next to nothing since" isn't a fair comment.
He was injured most of the time when at the Canes. Played well for the Magpies in-between injuries, and then, just when he had overcome his injuries and played a whole season for the Magpies, the Canes let him go.
-
@shark Granted - Cridge carried injuries in his Hurricanes tenure - I was very critical that he had tied up a spot. But when he got fit - holy hecka! - he is a beast and has an abrasive quality I don't see so much when looking around the other franchises. Not sure of his fitness status currently - I feel for the young man if he is injured again.
-
@GagaBoy I agree. I'm not sure he's injured. I had the impression from an interview last year that he has kind of shifted his focus to life after professional rugby. I think he'll still be interested if an opportunity comes along, but it's probably no longer the be-all and end-all for him. I guess repeated serious injuries do that to a player.
-
@Stargazer the Canes signed him in 2015. Probably too young at the time, and I recall a furore over his signing ahead of more experienced players, but he's not made an impression when he's been fit since.
I see he was another poach out of Christchurch by Hawkes Bay. They're as bad as Otago was in the early 90s.

You mean, in all those 8 minutes that the Canes gave him off the bench? In his first four years at the Canes he had two Anterior Cruciate Ligament ruptures in his knee, a fractured femur in his leg, shoulder surgery and a back injury.
He's been good in his 38 games for Hawke's Bay, although mostly not at lock, but in the 6 jersey.

Haha, you just made that up. He came to Hawke's Bay because Canterbury wasn't interested in signing him. Same story as Brodie Retallick, who didn't get a Canterbury academy contract.
The decreasing number of players we have from outside the province (we don't have many at the moment), are usually players that didn't get picked in their home province or are forced on us by the Hurricanes.
A few Cantabs came with the coach from Canterbury that nobody in the Bay rates, but not many of them made the Magpies.
Also, a Canterbury supporter accusing another (much smaller) province from poaching is a bit rich, isn't it? We'd love to get George Bridge back from Canterbury, if he doesn't make the ABs, by the way.

Cough Richie McCaw cough
Seriously thought, we only get the cantanb that can’t make it any further in chch because they’ve brought in other talent...no one chooses otago if they’re starting for canterbury

Ok that's even worse than next to nothing. That's pretty much nothing.
