But if it's anything less than a 10 team even split it becomes such a bad outcome for Aussie rugby that it's almost preferable to gamble on something new.

Australia has painted itself into a small-minded corner piled with raw sewage.

In the short term, a Trans- Ta$man competition is better financially for both RA and the NZRU.

NZRU can be as pure as they like but Australia has more eyeballs, more corporate dollars and is importantly on a much better timezone for the NH market. I've heard anecdotally that the audience in the UK for SuperAU has been around 50k, while Super NZ is struggling to get to 10k. It's purely because Australian rugby is at a more watchable hour.

And for RA there's no doubt NZ brings a better on-field product which will allow a better deal with broadcasters.

So while the exact comp structure might be up for debate, I'd think both unions see the benefit in the TT model.

Not sure how cutting a team will help with that.

You don't have to ration the glitter as much?

Lol, I have a load of mates in the UK, not one has expressed the desire to watch SRAu water the first weekend, the all religiously watch SRA, recorded or live. Anecdotally, with numbers?

Secondly Oz has more of that yes, but none of them are interested in rugby, unlike NZ

Apparently the NZRU will announce it's preferred format for 2021 this afternoon.

NZ Rugby wants new professional comp from 2021 with 8-10 teams involved.

Hope for five Kiwi teams, a Pasifika team and “working with Rugby Australia to seek expressions of interest from their current Super clubs and other interested parties to join the competition.”

So 4 Aussie teams, 5 kiwi teams and one team that will be executed on the field every single weekend

    Very ambiguous. 🙂

There needs to be an even number of teams to avoid byes.

I'm no fan of his, but he's right. It's an aggressive move from NZRU to take ownership of the TT model.

They are asking RA and Aussie clubs to come and knock on their door, begging bowl in hand.

What he knows about rugby would've fitted in Twitter's original character limit.

The Oz media really has its panties in a bunch regarding NZR not being the benevolent Australian rugby association it's clearly meant to be.

In addition, despite the 'fuck you SANZAAR' headlines in the Herald, this comp is for 2021 - not starting 2021, and it seems a stop gap in a CV19 world. SO I think, long term, the SANZAAR thing may be worked out, but next year - no way we will be able to fly around like in normal SR.

EDIT: I could be talking arse, tho, 'establishing' means starting from 2021? Dunno

    @Machpants

Yip I don’t think it’s a stopgap. It requires Aussie rugby to swallow its pride though which is a major hurdle. But ausssie rugby would be stronger imo with the reds, the waratahs and one other Aussie team, properly run and funded.

If Aussie says no thanks, we see if nz rugby happy with a 6 team comp. in any case, I think it’s better to be rid of the SA sides.

@Billy-Tell it's not really about swallowing our pride. You are basically asking us to abandon any hope of every having a rugby presence in a particular state. Is that pride?

Given NZ are being so belligerent i wouldn't be particularly upset if we just didn't participate.

Problem is that rugby is so weak in Australia that having a team in each state just leads to Aussie teams getting thrashed by nz ones. Whether home or away, but especially away.
