North vs South

@Machpants Oh, I definitely think Foster and co have decided on a criteria that maximises the number of their best players being involved. But the teams that will be selected will have a lot of SR combinations which defeats the purpose and uniqueness of such a game. Whitelock even mentioned it would be good to play against some of his Crusaders teammates.

I picked my teams (based on school) months ago and I'm sticking to them. I just need to track down Foster.
Have you got a link to those school based teams?
Im interested to see how the distribution of players would change based on schools. Here's what I selected during the lockdown period (based on every player being available). Obviously there would now be a few changes through injury and unavailability.
OK, a blast from the past - North Island vs South Island. The qualifier is which school you went to (some went to more than one school), not where you were born or the province you now play for. All players fit and available for selection NORTH ISLAND 1 Tu'ungafasi 2 Taylor 3 Laulala 4 S Barrett 5 Whitelock 6 Jacobson 7 Cane 8 Savea 9 Smith 10 B Barrett 11 Ioane 12 Laumape 13 Goodhue 14 Reece 15 J Barrett 16 Coles 17 Tu'inukuafe 18 Ta'avao 19 Tuipulotu 20 Papalii 21 Perenara 22 Black 23 Bridge SOUTH ISLAND 1 Moody 2 Dixon 3 Moli 4 Dunshea 5 Retallick 6 Grace 7 Lentjes 8 Blackadder 9 Drummond 10 Mo'unga 11 Alaimalo 12 Havili 13 A Lienert-Brown 14 Jordan 15 McKenzie 16 McAlister 17 D Lienert-Brown 18 Tokolahi 19 Romano 20 Harmon 21 Grooby? 22 Nankivell 23 L Fainga'anuku
Thanks. I can see now why they have gone with Provinces. Just not enough depth in the South island schools team to make the game competitive.

It doesn’t really matter anyway, this is just a way of doing a “trial” game and fitting in most of the players.
Far out! I reckon!!! Way for everyone to get all twisted about how it is being put together.
You don't think the North Island versing South Island rivalry will be bought up on here at all ? It is the point of the whole thing to add some tension / adversarial contest to a "trial" as a team sport.
With one team actually winning, there will be those that rub it in if the North lose (as an example) all part of the fun, but there can't be any excuses like "half your players were ours anyway".
In my mind this is just a random trial given a silly name. Call it what you want, it's just a trial and it won't become a fixture.
Nah maaate, this is oorriggiiinnnnnn!
Can we get Phil Gould over to do the pre game speech about passion and mateship etc?Thankfully NZ’s borders are closed...

What was the criteria for that North v South game in 2012? I seem to recall the same hoohah back then. Robbie Robinson playing for North was the subject of a bit of debate.

@Snowy North vs South does have history and was an important fixture back in the day - as were trials.
but the criteria for selection has always been confusing and controversial. Kirkpatrick even captained both islands albeit 3 years apart. For sure, that is why I bought it up.
I still believe the south have a handling advantage after my father told me they all have 6 fingers on each hand. Maybe that should be the defining criteria?

This may be due to the eligibility criteria and the limitation of squad sizes, but the main problem I have with Hinton's selection is the absence of Marino Mikaele-Tu'u from the North squad.
I also don't agree with all of Hinton's other selections.
