Old mate at #8 is the luckiest bloke in NZ right now

Agreed, I guess it highlights a lack of depth at 8. Be interesting to see how Vaa'i backs up.

Wainui has been a much better performer than I'd ever thought he would be, still can't believe he's starting over Alaimalo thought.

The Blues are stacked with outside back talent, even English superstar and Storm superstar's can't get a run. 😉

I guess you shouldn't have let the best communicator in the business get snapped up by the Highlanders then.

@Tim IIRC he was offered a WTG contract with the Blues when the Chiefs offered a Full contract...

No Cane and fucking Sowakula gets a start. Dude must have shown up at training if he gets a start based on his last performance. Blues forwards look too good. But I'll always back the Chiefs.

Yes. I would prefer someone that can play, not talk though. If you want 5,000 words a day get a teenage girl.

Ben Tameifuna helping out at Blues training

If he isn't injured he would be good as Scrum opposition.

Tameifuna was just watching this time

"He'd look good in a Blues jersey wouldn't he," Blues hooker James Parsons said with a chuckle. "He is good mates with Tom. We're keen to get him down here and scrum against one of the world's best props. Hopefully we'll have him here at some stage but he didn't want to put the boots on today."

Masks, sheds, basements, whatever - they do work. I know.
Unlike our previous fullback, who just talked apparently, and never ran straight, made a line break, or really did anything related to rugby. I'm a little harsh but...

TBF he did say "right now" so other cliches like "only as good as your last game" might be relevant.

“He has had this issue with his back in terms of it tightening up, so we are probably going to get it seen to,’’ Gatland said when he named his team on Thursday.

“It doesn’t seem to come right, and it just flares up again. Unfortunately on Tuesday he felt good, and he has done a bit of contact, and it has just tightened up a bit.

“Whether it is a disc issue that he needs to see someone about, and whether he needs an injection? He just needs to get that right. We are not taking any risks with him.’’’

I expected Pierce to get a seat on the bench but he is unlucky again. He was very good for the Blues during their tour to South Africa and I thought he had cemented his place. He offers more than GCT IMO.

The bad news for the Blues is they have lost Tom Robinson, something of a rock in their pack, for a number of weeks after the highly-promising loose forward suffered cartilage damage to his knee in the 30-20 victory over the Hurricanes at Eden Park.

The Blues also lost Blake Gibson to a minor hamstring injury in that opening match, forcing a major loose forward reshuffle for the Chiefs that sees three-test All Black Dalton Papalii promoted to start at openside - though there were nerves as he left training with ice on his shin - and American international Tony Lamborn come onto the bench.

@Tim poor old Blues, losing 2 loose forwards in one blow and having to replace them with test players and shouldabeen test players.

@cgrant I'd have him ahead of Goodhue usually but Goodhue had one of his better games on the weekend so deserves another go. Cowley Tuioti is more physical than Goodhue and offers more coming off the bench.
