I would normally say to stay on the Central Plateau, but with everything closed you will simply be driving past a mountain.
You seem to be missing Mt Maunganui. Still a nice spot, despite development.
Why NP to Tron then back down to Rotoiti? That is a long and shitty drive NP to Tron and if you really must go there the detour coming off the Coromandel isn't much and the roads are better.
Maybe NP to Taupo?Drove NP to Raglan today and it was amazing! Some roadworks made it slow, but the scenery was stunning. Afternoon sun on the hills, great coastline. The first half especially.
The Wife having her bag searched by security as she exited New World Te Kuiti was a bit of a lowlight I guess.
Why?

They were apparently searching all bags. 🤷♀️
Never a pleasant experience despite being innocent.

Of theft I guess? I dunno. She felt a bit violated, as I would have. Left a bad taste for sure.

NZ is terrible for that, because everything has to go to the lowest common denominator to be 'fair'.
They must have had something going on, as I've been there plenty of times and have never had that happen (my parents live in Oto and we go to that NW for 'fancy' stuff
My GF/wife getting asked for ID and not having her passport on her though - thats been common, despite us both being over 40/over 30 - and if you both don't produce the required documentation, too bad, no booze for you (even funnier, when we got docced last time, I think we had three bottle of Mt Difficulty in the cart - not exactly Marque Vous).
Still left empty handed though, despite her carrying our 18 month old son and me showing my Id which proved I'm over 40.
-
@gt12 that reminds me of going to the supermarket down Poole way to buy booze while on a family holiday. Took my nephew with me who was about 15 at the time I think and the check out person ID'd me. Laughed and handed it over, then "does he have ID?".
"What? He's not buying anything."
"I know but I have to ID him if he's with you"
"Ok, Jack go and wait at the car"
And carry on completing purchase. So stupid - do they ID the babies/toddlers/kids when families go shopping?

I mentioned Viands in the pie thread.
Maungatautari is one of the best of its kind in the world, and it is much improved since I was last there over 10 years ago. That link will show you what is on offer.
If the kids haven't seen kiwi, tuatara, kea, etc then Otorohanga is a good option. You could also do the rugby pilgrimage and stop in Te Kuiti to see the Colin Meads statue.
Saw the statue. Waitomo and Otorohanga Kiwi House both closed 😥

@voodoo if you come to Matamata to do Hobbiton, let me know and I'll buy you a beer!
Mate, that would be brilliant, will definitely keep you posted. What I really need is an activity (Hobbiton?) that I can convince the wife to take the kids to alone, so we can hit some golf balls pre-beer!
Absolutely, Hobbiton. That will kill a couple of hours! I will take you for a hit of golf on our course (If I remember correctly we are a similar-ish height so my clubs will be good for you) Beers at course! Winning!
Hobbiton also closed 😡
We will be driving Hamilton to Lake Rotoiti on Thursday, then the Lake to the Coromandel on Monday. Can make try to get to Matamata for a beer one of those days if you're around? Or golf if I can find another activity that will occupy the wife and kids for a few hours!

I see you went to Raglan. Did you try the fish n chips at the wharf?
We tried to go to Wharf Kitchen and Bar but was closed. The one right on the wharf point was open though, but didn't try it, is it good? Maybe for lunch tmrw?

It's called Raglan Fish, at the end of the wharf. It's been very good every time I've eaten there.

When at Rotoiti the Okere Falls Store is a decent place for a coffee or breakfast burrito. A mixture of hippy German and Mexican.
Or if later than breakfast this sounds good
KIM JONG SUPREME BURGER
APA brined Korean chicken, miso maple bacon, coriander slaw and kimchi with sesame sriracha aioli and hop-salted crispy shallots on a Bread Asylum bun, served with a side of Proper Crisps (GF & VE available)
$20 -
