NPC - news, injuries etc

@Chris I wouldn't be so sure about that. It all depends on whether the players who are still contracted to clubs in the NH get permission from their clubs. I recently read somewhere that - for that reason - Brodie Retallick might not be allowed to play for the Magpies.

Crotty and Todd are Japan based. I hear they have permission . Whitelock is still contracted to the Crusaders and with his top league season finished will play.
Taufua was speculation

Hardly a secret.
There is no place like home, just ask All Black and Gallagher Chiefs halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi who has signed to play for the Bay of Plenty Steamers. The 25-year-old has always had plans to return home to play his rugby.

Hey @Nepia
To quote an old Rowan Atkinson line, "Grant not big enough, eh?" :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:
-
@Chris-B Ta$man must have some wealthy benefactors, or their players are happy to take less from the province because their ABs and franchise contracts are so front loaded?
I wonder what the grants cover? Why does BoP get so much? I would have thought giving Southland more would make sense so they could compete a bit better in the player poaching market with their SI contemporaries.

@Nepia I suspect the players come because Ta$man's fans are so great!
Grants - I suspect they're done on club player numbers?
Possibly, would Northland have higher club player numbers than Harbour, Otago and the Naki though?

They're Northlanders - they'll be cooking the books!

@Nepia last data I saw (5 or 6 years old) Northland had about 7th or 8th highest player numbers
Oh sweet, that tracks then.
@taniwharugby said in Mitre 10 Cup - news, injuries etc:
but must be other factors as NH had about 4th highest in same report?
Or maybe not.

@Nepia I did add some to my post too, there have to be other factors too.
Yeah, it would be interesting to know what this money is actually for - @Chris-B is light on further info.

Whatever the provincial unions want to spend it on.
For unions like Hawkes Bay and Ta$man, the grant is about half of their annual revenue (the majority of unions are somewhere around $4 million) - and they probably spend about half of their annual revenue on their M10 Cup team (the rest is classified as "Growing the game" or "Administration").
I'm just preparing y'all for disappointment when the 2019 accounts come out later this year and Ta$man hasn't broken the bank on player payments.

@Chris-B The Roosters never break the bank either .... at least on the books.
Yeah - but they're Australians.
This is the Mako that we're talking about....
