Super Rugby Jerseys

The Landers v Bulls clash was a farce. There is a fucking SR jersey schedule published which even the media can access so how this happens is beyond me. Even more odd considering when the Crusaders and Canes were debuting their horrific alternative strips, the Highlanders boasted they would only wear theirs if there was a genuine clash. Hmmmm.
Adidas and NZR are making a joke, a mockery, of the Kiwi teams' away strips this year, for a marketing gimmick.
The away strip should be an inversion of the regular strip (ie Highlanders wear maroon and gold, Crusaders black with red etc) or at least something clearly symbolic of the region ala the NBAs City Edition jerseys which may not be in the same colours as any regular jersey but feature something distinctive of the home city or region. Adidas' marketing speel about the 'braided rivers' on the Crusaders' alternative strip is tenuous at best, while the colour is symbolic only of the sludge you get when you recycle ocean garbage.
Save the out-there shit for training strips as in recent years when the Crusaders has been at times teal and purple. Ironically this season the Crusaders training jersey is basically black.

Two minor points, and not disagreement at all.
- It's semantics but the term "away" strip should be "alternative" strip. Only change jerseys if there is a clash. In the old days it was always the home team who wore the alternate strip (I got told once it was because that had easier access to an alternative set, coz the visitors would have onky brought the one set with them). Can see the point that the visiting team may perhaps do that in thus day and age.
- I essentially agree about inverting the primary jersey colours, however I'd have no issue with the alternative strip using colours from other provinces within the franchise either.
-
This jersey colour debacle just highlighted that little thought goes into choosing the colours of the alternative jersey. The Highlanders' main jersey (blue) would also have clashed with the Bulls. Incorporating the colours of your other provincial unions seems like a no-brainer to me. NZR and Adidas would have been better to go back to white away jerseys to avoid this situation.
The Chiefs rightly wore their black jersey as their away jersey would have clashed with NSW.

With this debacle, NZR & Adidas have showed how much out of touch with the rugby public they are, either that or they just don't care!
How good have those jerseys been by the Marty Banks Banter page on Facebook?
Designing a jersey is not rocket science, when will they realise that less is more?

@booboo Could do a nice club day type thing, and perhaps play in the jersey of one of your member unions - the ones that clash the least for the team you are playing.
Yep I've always been in favour of this. Like how the Crusaders wore the West Coast strip for a game in 2011 after the Pike River disaster.
I'd be quite happy to see the Crusaders run out in green, black and gold (Mid and Sth Canty) or blue and red (Nelson, Marlborough, Ta$man, Buller). Or why not run with a club strip, or even a school strip (perhaps black with a red collar :))

I know that some EPL clubs actually put together a group from the supporters to help design shirts, thereby getting something that the fans actually want and it means something to them.
A friend of mine was invited onto the panel last year. -

The other part of this story is that the yellow and white jerseys that the Bulls wore in the second half were meant to be unveiled for their away match against the Waratahs on March 21.
I'm sure their fans are devastated they didn't keep that big reveal for the Tahs game.

Liked. Quoted. Hopefully someone in authority reads it.

@booboo for sure. We all know the NZR big dogs read the fern.
Only by proxy. The NZR big dogs read what journalists write and the journalists read our posts so they know what to write about.

I think having a half arsed, Landers half time actual reveal, and pointless official reveal for the Tahs is about the right amount of respect that these 3 teams deserve ATM

This article explains why the away jerseys are certain colours.
This year, the five New Zealand Super Rugby franchises are wearing new alternative jerseys as part of Adidas' 'Prime Blue' range, which are made from in part from plastic that has been picked up before it reaches the ocean.
As a result, the colour palette is limited to blues, whites, greens and greys, which causes a problem for the Highlanders because their 'home' jersey is already blue.

If there's one colour an alternate jersey should not clash with it's blue
Blues, Highlanders, NSW, Rebels, Stormers and Bulls all wear blue. 40% of the teams in the competition wear that colour as their primary jersey
-
@Bovidae Already knew that re the available colour range. But it's no excuse for adidas / NZR. An alternate jersey first and foremost needs to be significantly different to the regular jersey, and ideally clearly representative still of the region.

To be fair, I don't know how any of the officials could be reasonably be expected to have forseen this.
