Reds wing Filipo Daugunu scores five tries but left sweating over red card picked up in Rebels thumping

Filipo Daugunu's five-try afternoon was spoiled by a red card as the Queensland Reds feasted in a Super Rugby trial mismatch against the Melbourne Rebels.

    Injuries from yesterday's preseason game:

The Crusaders lost openside flanker Billy Harmon to a minor knee knock in the first half, while halfback Mitchell Drummond was taken off early in the second half as a precaution after a head knock.

Hurricanes wing Jonah Lowe left the field with a left shoulder issue, the same injury he suffered last season, which worried coach Jason Holland.

"I'm really hoping that's not as bad as it looks because Jonah is coming back from a shoulder injury and he's worked really hard this pre-season and is in great nick.

"I'm a little bit worried about him, but we'll see how he comes up."

Wow, there were 18,720 people at the Jaguares v Georgia XV game. Big crowd for a warm-up game. Yes, it was against a national team, but that team didn't include any regular test players. It will be interesting to see how many people will turn up for the second preseason game against Georgia XV in Buenos Aires.

Preseason is totally meaningless. My false hopes with the Blues going through unbeaten or going really well preseason, turning to custard ... year after bloody year.

THIS IS PROBABLY NOT OUR YEAR!!!!

Sanzaar also announced it had cut its team of referees for the 2020 season from 15 to 12, with Kiwis Glen Jackson (retired), Nick Briant and South African Egon Seconds gone from the team.

@Tim Jackson was expected; cutting Egon Seconds from the team is SANZAAR's best decision ever; Nick Briant surprises me. He isn't a bad ref, especially if you consider that Pickerill is still there.

Even an organisation as poorly run as SANZAAR could see he was a cheat.

@Stargazer regardless of these being pre season games, there’s some very well constructed tries especially in the first game..hard to believe we are watching South African teams compared to what they dished up only a few years ago..ball handling at times was superb..!

Eh? I thought it was the Blues year every year with the word "potential" in every sentence uttered. It would be a weird season indeed without the Auckland cheer leading squad going through their emotional roller coaster.

irrational optimism is a key part of being a fan. Thinking - maybe this is our year, maybe maybe maybe, until we're crushed under the heel of reality.

This year I'm different, mildly optimistic, but winning takes time. We're better positioned administratively than we have been for probably 20-25 years, which is massive. John Hart, Ian McKinnon and Sam Loto-Iiga seem to be making a big difference behind the scenes. It just takes time...

That is the Bluesy spirit! Knowing it is going to go tits up but still even after all the crushing disappointments, eternally hopeful. One day you will be right and when that day comes you'll be able to push your chest out and say, "I told you so!"
