and while i am typing, another goes.

This is a fucking embarrassment. Australia got over 200 for only 1 when they were batting properly, on the same goddam deck.

@mariner4life In both Kane's and Tom's incidents, we've lost our wicket but retained our review. 🙂

    so, yay?

    I'll say it again.

When do some questions start getting asked about Peter Fulton as a batting coach?

this "performance" should see a review of the entire coaching panel.

    It seems bizarre.

Small wins, that are however burned by Jeet and Philips - neither of whom apparently could tell they'd nicked out.

On the plus side - unless Fults is an active saboteur, Craig McMillan's market value must be absolutely soaring! 🙂

Gary Stead. Craig MacMillan. Peter Fulton. Our coaching staff are just a rogue's gallery of failed test players. Andre Adams as well?

Craig McMillan did a pretty good job as the batting coach (or had better luck with his opposition). Playing records are irrelevant to coaching ability. However, the players on field performance does raise questions about the coaching.

@mariner4life Macca was our batting coach for five years under Hesson. The man was a coaching genius!

And he had a test batting average of 38.5. Worthy!

The bloke who hailed this as the best Black Caps side to go to Australia should give himself uppercuts for life.

A much better comparison would be with the 94/95 Black Caps side for meek capitulations and ineffectual bowling.

He's unlucky, given it looked like it was going down leg. And the tracker had it just clipping.

But as someone said to me once, nobody feels sorry for you if you get bowled and the ball 'just clips' the stumps.

while i have a certain level of understanding of that take, i think there is a slight difference, and that is what causes the angst

If you get bowled, you're out. Shit shot, piss off, you're out

With the "just clipping" and umpires call bullshit, you get a situation where your outcome is now dependent on who reviews. If that's given not out, and the Aussies review, it stays not out. Same delivery, two different outcomes. It should be either out, or not out

(i have said in the past, i think DRS for LBW should be gone unless it's to see if you hit it)

    Agree with most of that.

"Umpires call" is bullshit. They get one look at full speed. LBW is where DRS should be used, but take the original decision out of it, use the half ball measurement to eliminate ball tracking minor discrepancies and the decision is the 3rd umpire's who has all of the benefits of slow mo and tech.

When you get a shithead like Erasmus giving the benefit to the bowler (mostly Aussies this time around) it goes wrong.

None of that would have changed any results, given that we have been shit, but it does show flaws in the system. Thanks Marais.

I can see why he would want to top up his pay though:
    Marais Erasmus South Africa $3000 $1000 $2200 $35000 08

That's for tests, T20, ODI, annual and his world ranking.

    Fuck that for a living.

But on the two recent Erasmus LBW decisions, the ball was hitting the stumps according to the technology. Sure it was the outside of the leg stump, but hitting is hitting.

Under the system you are proposing, why have umpires on the field at all? You can just appeal to Hawkeye who will tell you whether it was out or not.

The DRS system was introduced to eliminate the howler. And I think on the whole the system works pretty well. You can argue both calls by Erasmus, but you certainly can't say either is a howler. Stiff shit for the Kiwis but nobody can claim they have been robbed.

Erasmus has not given us the benefit of the doubt very often at all. The Latham dismissal looked quite doubtful in real speed

They still have to make the call. Every appeal would take forever.
I have said several times it is after a DRS review that umpires call becomes contentious. They don't have the benefit of the replays, etc. AFTER it goes to DRS then there is no "umpires call" from on field, it is done by the 3rd umpire and the technology and must be 1/2 ball to eliminate any ball tracking errors.

I'd say the lbws are both pretty poor decisions, because when a seamer is bowling it's an absolute howler if the ball is completely missing the stumps on line (not so much if it's going over the top). So Marais is a millimetre away from a howler. Compounds that it's been pretty much our best batsmen in each instance being fired for nothing.

It's more annoying that we've had to review better appeals to get lbws out of him.

I wonder whether we're reaping a cost of being the "nice guys" of international cricket?

It may be a millimetre away from a howler, but it's still not a howler. The ball was likely clipping the stumps. If the NZ bats don't like it they should use their bat next time instead.

And the 'nice guys' thing is pretty ludicrous. I get that you are all frustrated about the shellackings you have copped, but that theory does not have much logical foundation.

@barbarian There's no doubt though that we've had the rough end of Marais' decisions.
