BOP Eruption?

Very sad to hear, I went there as a kid and it was an amazing experience. Definitely a risk involved visiting it as it is a live volcano, but still incredibly bad luck.

24 Aussies might have been on the island

I always find it weird how initially boats and helis can get there to rescue people. People react to help. Once it's official is now to dangerous to too there.
Not sure what's weird about that.
I'm fortunately enough to have never had to make this decision (knock on wood!), but surely if you are there, you are there, and instincts take over. Firstly, to look after yourself, secondly to help out others. You have to make a judgement call on if your boat/heli goes back to pick up people who need to be evacuated. If you realistically think you can do it without hurting yourself, why wouldn't you?

I think he means if regular Joe's can do it why can't the authorities?

Look at the ash covering the beach, and that helicopter is smashed
This image, apparently taken just prior to the eruption seems to show people at the crater just before the eruption (red arrow). Considering the amount of debris that was probably being thrown into the air, that would not have been a good place to be

Because as an individual you can choose to risk your own life.
As an authority you cannot volunteer someone else to lose theirs.

That shift in risk assessment since the first responders got people out is sadly a good one. If no one is still alive on the Island to save...
Police update
The Police Eagle helicopter, rescue helicopter, and NZDF aircraft have undertaken a number of aerial reconnaissance flights over the island since the eruption, but no signs of life have been seen at any point, police say.
"Police believe that anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued at the time of the evacuation.
"Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island.
"Police is working urgently to confirm the exact number of those who have died, further to the five confirmed deceased already."

The police say eight people are still missing on White Island / Whakaari.
Five people have been confirmed dead and 31 are injured and are being treated in hospital.
Among the missing are Australians, Americans, Chinese, British and Malaysians, as well as New Zealanders.

Ok , so at the memorial Ardern needs photo ops with a cork hat, Stetson , coolie hat , flat cap and a fez . It’s going to be a long day for her .
Yes I’m well aware I’m going to hell .

I found the quote “the island hasn’t had a major eruption since...... 2000“ say what, the island has a history of activity and it is safe to walk on it? How did this place have a licence to begin with, or am I overthinking it.
My wife and I discussed this last night. While in Japan for the RWC we went to Mt Aso, but couldn't get within one kilometre of the caldera because of the increased activity.
And it appears they shared the same alert level of two on the scale of 1-5.

I find people using this tragedy as an excuse to push the Maori name of the island incredibly distasteful. I live in this area and never ever heard the Maori name from anyone in the public, news etc
Quite happy enough for it have dual names, but for now to be the time they decide to start using it.. fuck ...off.
