At a first quick glance it looks like there are just two first fives named JGB and Fletcher Smith (unless I have missed something obvious). Can any Hurricanes supporters with connections to heavenly bodies please start praying for some sort of devine miracle if this is the case?
Jordie will get a run at this rate
Story is that his run at 10 at the RWC excited the Canes. Don’t be surprised to see him there as first choice
-
@Crucial interview was all about him at 15, then the team list showed him as a midfield back. But had no outside backs listed at all lol
Looking at the PDF of all the teams, only 4 outside backs listed (and one's in the 7s), so there is Def some flexibility in the squad

@Machpants to be honest ,I am on the opposite view, for all we know this South African player could work out in the same way both Tyler Ardron for the chiefs and Nemani Naholo did for the Crusaders...there selections once people saw what they bought to the table were never questioned..
I just think adds a bit of a point of difference to the comp..there will be plenty of young players that will be in wider training groups , and you bet they are only an injury away from joining the big time. -
@Steven-Harris I would rather of them looked at some up and coming outside back from the pacific Islands there’s got to be heaps that would be a better fit then Van Wyk
-
@mikey07 I would imagine Plumtree would have had a hand in this selection, but also imagine he would have done some due diligence on this guys selection...hey if this guy has a stellar season , everyone will be lauding this selection..🤞
-
@Steven-Harris haha isn’t that part of being an arm chair selector. I’m not doubting he won’t be good but just rather something from closer to home got a chance.
-
@mikey07 I think it's only for one season, like Tom Parsons, so back in May for the second round of club rugby in Hawke's Bay and then the Mitre 10 But you never know; if they like him, they may try to lure him there, permanently. Hopefully, that won't happen.

Devan Flanders has been listed as a loose forward here so I'm hoping that was someone not doing their job properly. Apart from the obvious release of Beaudy and the lack of depth at 10, I think the Canes look stronger than they did last year. Finally we have some good looking depth in the tight five and good depth in most areas. I expect us to push for the title.
-
@Canes4life Flanders as a loosie makes way more sense!
-
@Canes4life I admire your positivity, but I'd like to point you too the oft repeated phrase 'you don't win the comp/cup without a stellar ten'
I hope I'm wrong
-
@Stargazer He is our future no 8 IMO. Has all the hallmarks of a future captain. Just hope he lives up to the billing.
-
@Canes4life Flanders is only 20 years old, so give him a few years before judging.
-
Fair call, he looks like a real talent from what I've seen. Hopefully he gets a good trot this year.
-
@Machpants you aren't wrong. Just hope we can buck that trend with what looks to be a promising engine room. If they can get a stable platform then we have the weapons to do the job, just need a steady 10 to guide the ship.
I would really have liked to see the signing of Lincoln McClutchie - a little general worth investing in IMO.
