    How many of the pro-Rennie guys are the same guys who believe Hansen was propped up by Wayne Smith.......

    Don't know about propped up but Smith for McLeod was a downgrade for sure.

    Hardly fair, any coach is a downgrade from Wayne Smith. I think he's done a fine job, if you look at the analysis articles pre England, we've been the top defensive team

    ... and they only scored 19 points against us. Defence wasn't really what killed us; part of it, but not the main thing

    Feels like a goalpost shift here.

    Hansen was at his best when he had world class assistants, and Wayne Smith has been probably the best ever. That’s not exactly being propped up by, but is just noting that he is reliant upon having a great team. Was the same for Ted.

    And, I think the same of Rennie. He is my preferred option, but only if he comes with world class assistants. If only that was Wayne Smith.

    What I do like about Rennie is that he seems suited to the head coach role and has shown he can and will use other experts, and use them well. Plus, he’s won at different levels. However, those skills may be for shit if he can’t get good assistants.

    At the end of the day, it’s a coaching team, so I’ll reserve final judgment until I learn which people can get which assistants.

    I also wonder whether anyone would argue that Hansen’s team since 2015 has been as good as the one he had from 2012 through to 2015. I wouldn’t and I think that may be a future lesson to take from the WC cycle.

    @nzzp With two disallowed tries. Our defence was weak as shit in that game.

    @Machpants it is strange, our defence has been largely bloody good but there have been some games (England, Wobblies in Perth sans SB, SA last year x 2, and Japan last year - all bar the England game, we conceded >30) have been poor.

    @gt12 the 2012-2015 team had 2 dead set greats of the game, 4 other NZ greats, arguments for 2 as world greats, so always gonna be a step down from that

    One was a massive obstruction the other was lucky to get ruled out.

    That said, we didnt' lose that mainly because of our defence. We got smashed up front, and couldn'tmake any yards with the ball. It was horrific.

    @nzzp They made the gainline at will because our defense was passive.

    @nzzp yeah was an odd game, England, probably should have scored more times, but didnt, the 2 disallowed tries were both correct calls, but doesnt detract form the fact they were there to score them...parts of that game our d was good, but the weight pf English pressure told.

    Don't disagree - but it wasn't as rubbish as our attack or our forwards. Facts are we thought they'd get around twenty points and they did. Based on our attack the week before, I thought we'd get to high twenties/low thirties but actually we just sucked.

    @nzzp shades of Perth...

    if they pick themselves up off the floor again, as they did post-Perth, then a few reps will be refurbished.

    Main problem was the breakdown. 18 turnovers and 11 penalties.

    remember in Perth we were in the game when the Red happened to ScoBa. 2 points in it, despite being belted up front. Our forwards need a major overhaul, btu I can't see anyone they've left out that will make a difference.

    It shouldn't though, as this game isn't against England. Last week wasn't game one of a series to find the best team in the World. Smashing Wales (if that happens) doesn't make up for last week's embarrassment. They should all continue to wear that - if 'learnings' happen, neat, but that pay off comes next time we play England and any other team in a game that has meaning for both teams.

    @gt12 I realise that.

    I mean after being belted last week they have rung changes and should have refocused.

    That's an attitude thing, not the coaches.

    I hope we start playing England a lot more regularly. It's a travesty that the strongest NH union barely ever plays the strongest SH union.

    Yeah if only there were some sort of round robin yearly competition....

    Ild like to see Joseph and Brown with Mcleod as Defence. for me, Joseph and Brown are ready to take the ABs into the next phase of their evolution. Robertson is just a clone of the current system who is not as inventive as I believe is needed for the new coach. The world has caught up and if we do not get a coach who can mold and take the ABs into a new era we could be playing catch-up for a while.

    My pick would be Gatland,but hes not available. I want a coach with international experience,failing that, northern hemisphere experience. 2 year contract. 2 years is long enough to assess whether we are on the right or wrong track.
