Tried watching Jaws the revenge which has zero on rotten tomatoes, lasted 10 minutes . The scene where the guy gets his arm bitten off is beyond bad.

Saw 'Joker' tonight. Have had 2 weeks of folk telling me to see it as well as the cashier at the candybar raving about it so was very concerned my expectations would be too high. They weren't, really enjoyed it, Pheonix was superb, they did a terrific job creating such a character. I don't understand the political hoo-ha about it, I understand some review places gave it a bad review on principle but I haven't looked into that properly. 5 / 5 for me.

@Rembrandt interesting, a colleague of mine say it yesterday and said if you don't expect DC, it's really good and Phoenix is brilliant in his portrayal of the character. Real underlying menace.

@antipodean yeah it doesn't really feel like a comic book movie. Easily holds up as a stand alone movie but still fits in the dc universe for comic fans but they aren't in-your-face about it. If that makes sense.

Anyone watched The Laundromat on Netflix? Amazing cast (Streep, Oldman, Banderas etc), but the reviews are kind of terrible and I'm on the fence.

This thread's been a bit quiet so I'll add some recently seen movies.

Hustlers: Received a lot of hype like Widows, but actually lived up to the hype. Stars J Lo, the mum from Fresh of the Boat, and one of the cast of Riverdale who is extremely hot. They're strippers. Alas, no nudity sorry fellas. Still worth seeing.

American Animals: Half movie half doco about four guys who plan to steal some rare books from a university library. Takes a while to get used to the switching between movie and doco but a really interesting story told from multiple slightly different viewpoints sometimes.

Zombieland Double Tap: Fun sequel getting mostly shitty reviews ... critics are idiots sometimes.

Blinded by the Light. Coming of age story about a Pakistani boy growing up in Thatcher's Britain who finds understanding through the music of Bruce Springsteen. I thought this was a great film by the director who made Bend it Like Beckham, actually based on a true story. 5 denim jackets out of 5

Watched The ICeman, which is based on the true story of Contract Killer, Richard Kuklinski.

Was a decent watch, although the little bits I have read and heard about him from other sources, not sure it portrayed him as the ruthless emotionless killer he was.

Yesterday. Cute comedy about a failed musician who has an accident, when he wakes up he is the only one to remember the Beatles and their songs 4 living John Lennons out of 5 Abbey Roads

Stuber. Action comedy about an uber driver whose car gets commandeered by a tough muscle bound cop. Lots of in jokes here, like Collateral with a sense of humour. 3.5 rescued dogs out of 5 spinster classes

Good to hear as I really liked the first one, it also made my list of movies that critics hated but audiences loved so was keen to see it.

I remember the good old days where a critics job was to evaluate a movie on its merits...back then a journalists job was to report the news.

    Simpler times.

I refuse to look at reviews anymore. Too many not so hidden agendas and not enough actual critiquing. Dave Chappelle etc..

Scary Stories to tell in the dark. Not overly original. Some mild scares but not as good as I thought it would be. Save yourself some time and watch IT 2 instead.

Ditto - really enjoyed the first one. Well written, well acted, well directed. Funny and entertaining.

@canefan I loved Yesterday, easy watch, great music, formula story, but just done so well, as the British do.
