    @sparky gym bunnies?

Can't remember which TSF poster made that comment about the Boks... 😉

Not sure we think the Boks are gym bunnies. Roid ragers perhaps...

    I want Foster.

It's worth the money just to see the over-reaction and implosion.

    Laurie gives his thoughts...

In an ideal world, we somehow get Razor, Rennie, JJ & TB all involved 🙂

I agree with what Mains had to say there

To me Robertson is a good candidate for an assistant coach. I don't want him for the head coach for the reasons Mains describes.

Razor has the perfect set of skills for the modern head coach. Trusts his staff, focuses on the bigger picture. Don't forget that when he came into the Crusaders the team looked like a spent force. He inherited some great players but not a winning team. That seems like a good match for the ABs job.

The worry I have is that he's the second coming of Wayne Smith. Selected too soon for the top job and not able to make the most of it.

Rennie has the best CV of the bunch. I think he'd be a great pick. He has similar skills to Robertson, has more experience and a wider range of experience.

I don't trust Jospeh. He had some terrible seasons at the highlanders and his success was more down to good recruitment than brilliance as a coach. (Yes, recruitment is a part of the job but less revelant at the national level).

Wayne Smith's main shortcoming was his relative shyness and sensitivity to pressure. Brilliant behind the scenes though.
    Razor is no shrinking violet.

I'd be happy with Rennie or Razor. Rennie with Razor as assistant might be ideal.

@Cyclops I was looking at the ages of the modern-day AB coaches and Mains was the youngest at 46. Wyllie was 47 but had been an assistant coach under Lochore and the rest have been 50+.

WTF! Mains was only 46 when he took over the ABs.

I forgot about Mitchell (37) and Smith (43). Further backs up my point about age and experience.

Might be misunderstanding something but wasn't Smith 43 when he took the top job? (The first time out)

I don't think age is that relevant. Good enough = old enough. Experience and age are different measures. Jamie Joseph is under 50 but I don't think he lacks experience. Robertson is only 4 years younger but clearly has a very different CV having been Canterbury based for basically his whole career.

@Cyclops Fair point. Experience to me, is coaching different groups of players and in different systems.

    Mitchell (37)

is he another whose name should be thrown in the ring, or did he burn too many bridges?

    What about Deans?

Depending on thier contract status's would they consider it? Would NZR?

Question - is Darren Shand staying on as manager? I hope so, because we've accumulated a vast amount of IP under Henry, Hansen et al and we don't want to lose all that with a complete clean out. I'd also be pretty happy to see any of Hansen, Henry and Smith retain some involvement on a consulting basis, so that their experience can be transferred.

I'd be happy enough with either Rennie or Razor. I've paid less attention to Jamie Joseph - he seems to have taken on a few more onerous tasks, so a bit more of a checkered record of success. seems like he has had the Brave Blossoms humming and winning Super rugby with The Highlanders is no mean feat.

Razor - well he hasn't faced too much adversity in terms of lack of success, but to be honest, it's hard to see that the next AB coach will face too much adversity unless he makes an absolute pig's ear of the job. The adversity will come if we fail at the next RWC and at that point the experience will come too late. I'm less concerned about the overseas coaching thing - Razor's got a style that clearly resonates with NZ players. Don't think he really needs to spend two years losing some games coaching a British club - and he's spent time playing in Ireland, France and Japan so has some experience of how things are done differently.

Rennie - well, the worrying thing about Dave is that reading reports from Australia, it almost seems like a done deal that they've got him. So maybe I need to scratch my comment about the next AB coach not having to face too much adversity! I don't know why he'd sign up with the Wallabies when it's been well known that the AB job was coming up, but it's always kind of seemed that he's not really one of NZ rugby's favourite sons.

you would think that with him knowing the AB job was coming up, he'd have chucked in his applicaiton there too, Aus probably want him to take thie roffer but he's waiting to hear from NZR??

@taniwharugby You'd certainly hope so - but, I've read reports saying that Scott Johnson has already told Wallabies staff that Rennie has the job.
