If the fern had an option to 'tag' members I'd be tagging Bones for his thoughts on that. -

It's like the one-two punch of GSP retiring and Anderson Silva getting knocked out all over again. Dana was pretty obviously upset afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's good for MMA and probably for Rousey as well, but for the UFC itself? Not really.

Are you sure McGregor is the underdog? -

Denigrating any sport is a bit rich for any of us that would get up at 4 in the morning to watch 30 blokes chase around and egg shaped ball. -

Yeah but players generally aren't out to deliberately maim and assault eachother especially now Troy Flavell and Danny Grewcock have retired. -

That's only a matter of degree. There's plenty of people who would argue that rugby is brutal and disgusting. Reality is that they're all there by choice and extremely high level athletes. -

People love whining about sports they're completely ignorant of. No clue that there's a shitload of technique involved, that a lot of those "barbarians" are Olympians (including Rousey) or that it's technically a safer sport than boxing because there's less head trauma (even ignoring the submission game, a quick knockout is safer than hundreds of softer hits to the head).

Yes, by a mile. As much as I'd love to see him win, Aldo's dominated that division from day one.
-

I never said it was low quality. I wouldn't actually know one way or the other. Maybe Upper Hutt skanks are of a high striking quality as well. (which would be nice as they need to be high quality at something)
-

All of the odds I've seen have him as favourite -

Although it's not surprising McGregor is favourite at Paddy Power etc.

I'm sure Aldo would be favourite at Brazilianaires or whatever the betting equivalent is in Rio.
-

Pretty sure sports gambling is illegal in Brazil, which is why the odds are so skewed in Conor's favour. Shitloads of Irish backing their boy even though he's never fought anyone in Aldo's class (though to be fair, there's only one guy in Aldo's class and that's Aldo).

Like I said, I'd love to see it happen but I'm being realistic, so I don't think Conor has much of a chance. Aldo will leg kick the shit out of him.
-

Been a few large bouts recently so I'm surprised this thread has died. UFC has for me well and truly taken over boxing, and I've really started to get into it of late - maybe just due to lack of rugby, but I'm sure it'll stick around now that I have Fox Sports.

First bout to talk about has to be Aldo / McGregor. 13 seconds! That was pretty amazing, and all the hype which CM has been generating has been quite phenomenal for the growth of the sport. Diaz and Dos Anjos both called him out after winning their fights on UFC Fox 17.

Overeem over Dos Santos yesterday was a weird fight. They literally just danced around the rings for the first round, with pretty much so no contact. Got a bit more brutal in the second round before Overeem caught him and got the TKO. JDS probably could have gotten up, maybe a slightly controversial end to the fight, he was limited in his protection and one punch could have caused irrepairable damage.

Diaz over Johnson was pretty close to a boxing match, Diaz just kept jabbing away and Johnson was getting very frustrated. Neither fighter seemed to have any respect for each other with constant goading and fighting after the bell. Although Diaz post match interview was rather, shall we say, council estate, so maybe he's just that sort of person.

The main billing,Dos Anjos over Cerrone, I didn't know too much about (still a newbie to UFC), but Dos Anjos seemed to be all over him. Cerrone was throwing punches, but didn't seem tough enough to be able to absorb the hits.
-

Boxing is a stupid sport when compared to UFC, Boxing is far more artificial, contrived and dangerous (for not good reason)

-

Finally managed to catch UFC 195 over the weekend. Watched it with my mother of all people, and she couldn't get enough of it either. Crazy sport!

I've still got a fair bit to learn about the submissions, but Rogan and co were going on a fair about the Ortega result - this was a fight probalby more for the purists, but hopefully with time I'll learn more about them, to understand exactly what happened here.

Miocic smashing of Arlovski was bloody impressive. Given what he also did to Mark Hunt, he must be next up to fight the winner of Velasquez vs Werdum 2.

but Lawler vs Condit - What. A. Fight. The fifth round was like nothing I've seen in boxing, probably since watching archive footage of Ali vs Frazier. A very hard fight to pick, as on points, surely, SURELY Condit should have won it. But if the fight had gone on a minute longer, I think Lawler would have taken it, as both were out on their feet by the end, but Lawler was all over him. 25 mins of fighting, but it passed in a flash, awesome.
-

Fight Night 82

Best card in some time.

And Wonder Boy is legit.
-
Hendricks fought a terrible gameplan; once his one takedown attempt failed he just stood back in kicking range and let Thompson pick his shots.

I'd love to see Thompson rematch Matt Brown next, or whichever of Condit/Woodley doesn't get the title shot. Thompson - Lawlor would be crazy, but I think Thompson is one fight off.

Was the card really that good? Just seemed like another Fight Night card when I looked at the card beforehand, so I didn't pay a whole load of attention to it.

Have to say I'm happy with Hendricks losing again. All the whining about a title shot back before he got one, backing out of TWO different out-of-competition drug tests that GSP paid for (and followed through with himself) and his constant excuses made him look like a piston wristed gibbon. I'm not surprised he started looking shit once the UFC started putting more of an emphasis on drug testing.
