Yep. 2 in the whole match, both in the first half.

And it was France, France! FFS. Hardly the cleanest, most well disciplined team on the planet. Mutter, mutter. Who plays a rugby match and only gives away only two penalties? You just aren't playing properly, or you have a ref in your pocket...

    Rodders?

He was awesome in that game IIRC.

Weather forecast is looking better for gametime - only 20% chance of precipitation.

@Victor-Meldrew a lot of players were. It's why i give the brains trust a bit of leeway. I've captained games where pretty much everything is going right, and it looks for all money like you are about to break it open. And suddenly it's full time and you've lost by a couple.

The stats, the way the game played out, everything points to an NZ win. Except the bit that matters the most.

Unreal isn't it. Knock out rugby is a fluffybunny.

You don't worry about drop goals, until you do...

Just one penalty in the 2nd half would have been enough.

Indeed. But I do recall plenty of discussion pre 07 RWC about us having proponents of the drop goal, especially after the euphoria of JW and 2003.

Then the drum beating got louder heading into 2011...

France adapted better to the Ref than we did.

France adapted better to the lack of a ref than we did.

McCaw's captaincy, or lack of, was also a key factor. He was anything but Mr Cool, calm and collected in that game.

yep. who can forget the frogs scoring and the AB's being in a huddle and richie just off to the side..
who else should have been captain in that team though?

Tana (the player and captain, not the coach - Blues fans) should have held on to the RWC, I'm convinced that in that alternate timeline we win.

The same Tana that was showing major signs in the back end of 2004 and into 2005 that he had slowed significantly?

Can you keep your alternate Cantab facts out of this please? I'm trying to get a senior player on the field who'll get the team to set for a drop goal at some stage.

Heading into the 2007 RWC Aaron Mauger had made the most drop goals of any player in the squad and yet he was sitting in the stands for the QF. Shocker....

Would his captain have let him kick a drop goal?
Would 3 points have won us the game if we didn't have our best attacking player on the field?
Would he have missed frequently like Mehrts did in 1995?

The player on the field didn't matter, it was the decision not to set for one that was the issue.

Pretty shocked not to see Bender on the bench. No way on earth anyone can convince me that Jordie is a better option. Unless he is injured that is a real head scratcher.

I reckon Jordie's selection betrays some concern about Reece's ability under the high ball. With JB on the bench, they can defuse the aerial threat, but still maintain some of the dangerous attacking ability (which they will lose a lot of with BFA's current form). If JB needs to come and rescue Reece, I can see BFA playing a semi and final (should we make it that far)

There has always been, and still remains, more chance of the ABs winning a Test Match with BFA in the starting XV (23) than being on the pine.

Someone said they thought it was a bit small?

Not too sure, but thought the idea was to share some games with Scotland and Wales. Dublin has 2 big stadiums and Belfast's Windsor Park is also pretty big - and there's quite a few big GAA places in Cork etc.

As Irish rugby is all of Ireland, it would a great way to showcase the country and it's passion for the game. Welcome would be pretty warm, that's for sure.

It would be a disaster - we gave them the headquarters for World Rugby and look what's happened to the game!

I remember 2007 , rotation was blamed by some . Still not sure how that lost that game.

Simples. France adapted better to the Ref than we did.

Yeah, amazing that they were able to adapt to a ref that only penalised the other team while ignoring all of their countless indiscretions. They really had to think on their feet there.

I’ve never watched that game again , although seen the tries in highlights ,

Serious question because I can’t remember, Did he penalise us in the second half ?

I was under the impression he just put the whistle away in general under pressure , but it affected us more because we had all the ball .

Ya know wha lads? I think we're going to beat you fuckers! Especially since some of you called us part of the UK!

    Bring it on!!

Well part of Ireland (15%) is part of the UK. It’s an easy mistake to make since most people don’t realise that Ireland is a separate sovereign state, even Ireland is the name of the rugby team that represents Ireland and Northern Ireland as that is what it was called when they first played as Ireland, before it was split into Northern Ireland and Ireland. It’s a bit like New Zealand is part of Australia (big island, little island) which means I suppose that New Zealand is very like Ireland - small, speak funny, and poke fun at the British occasionally, and have a Queen as their head of state....

    Hope that clears things up.
