France adapted better to the Ref than we did.

France adapted better to the lack of a ref than we did.

McCaw's captaincy, or lack of, was also a key factor. He was anything but Mr Cool, calm and collected in that game.

yep. who can forget the frogs scoring and the AB's being in a huddle and richie just off to the side..
who else should have been captain in that team though?

Tana (the player and captain, not the coach - Blues fans) should have held on to the RWC, I'm convinced that in that alternate timeline we win.

The same Tana that was showing major signs in the back end of 2004 and into 2005 that he had slowed significantly?

Can you keep your alternate Cantab facts out of this please? I'm trying to get a senior player on the field who'll get the team to set for a drop goal at some stage.

Heading into the 2007 RWC Aaron Mauger had made the most drop goals of any player in the squad and yet he was sitting in the stands for the QF. Shocker....

Yeah, the capital has some fabulous stadiums. Wembley, Emirates and West Ham’s home are all terrific 😉

    From: https://www.the42.ie/analysis-ireland-all-blacks-world-cup-4855722-Oct2019/

Some interesting gifs and stuff in the above.

    Interesting snippets:

Andy Farrell’s defence has been excellent in this World Cup. Ireland have only conceded two tries to date, have the best tackle success of any team at 90% and have averaged the fewest linebreaks conceded per game (3).

In the 16-9 win in Dublin last year, Ireland kept New Zealand to single figures and tryless for the first time in a Test match for 20 years and their defence was clearly a key component to the win.

Intriguingly, Farrell’s defence also kept the All Blacks tryless in the second Lions Test in 2017. In short, Farrell has been the opposition defence coach for the only two games in five years in which New Zealand have failed to score a try.

@Rapido based around a very good and disciplined rush defence, obviously we have been working on exploiting this...

You don't worry about drop goals, until you do...

Just one penalty in the 2nd half would have been enough.

Yep. 2 in the whole match, both in the first half.

And it was France, France! FFS. Hardly the cleanest, most well disciplined team on the planet. Mutter, mutter. Who plays a rugby match and only gives away only two penalties? You just aren't playing properly, or you have a ref in your pocket...

@Victor-Meldrew a lot of players were. It's why i give the brains trust a bit of leeway. I've captained games where pretty much everything is going right, and it looks for all money like you are about to break it open. And suddenly it's full time and you've lost by a couple.

The stats, the way the game played out, everything points to an NZ win. Except the bit that matters the most.

Unreal isn't it. Knock out rugby is a fluffybunny.

Indeed. But I do recall plenty of discussion pre 07 RWC about us having proponents of the drop goal, especially after the euphoria of JW and 2003.

Then the drum beating got louder heading into 2011...
