Apparently the fastest recorded 1,000 meter by a NZer this year is 2.44.... Eliud's fastest 1km split was 2.43

    phenomenal

Who runs 1000m and times it?

Seems likely he had the record by default.

Good point, perhaps you should pop out tomorrow and run 1,000 metres and claim the record for yourself.

Precisely. Pick a distance you think you're good at and keep in mind how you're going to continuously maintain that pace.

Yeah. I love the 10k, my favourite distance by a mile. Gives me an opportunity to really pace myself and plenty in the tank for a big finish.

My best time - 52 minutes dead. Not great, but not shit either.

His time. On average. 4 times. 28:33.

I'm not worthy. Not even close.

Yeah I noticed that fact on a re-read. But didn’t amend as thought only a pedantic arsehole would point it out.

Athletics New Zealand Rankings and Records

John Walker has the national record for 1000 metres at 2.17. (If you're a pretty shit hot runner you could nip out and grab that national record for this year - and stick with Eliud over the first km).

The Robertson twins would still be ahead of Eliud after 10kms.

And Zane Robertson might have been a bit behind him getting close to the half-marathon, but would have sprinted past and collapsed over the line (I think Eliud was probably tracking at 59.55 at that point).

But, Zane would be about 3kms behind at the full marathon distance - that's a shit hot time by a NZer - edit 457th best ever! 🙂

It's still fast. But you can see the different quality of the 800m and 1500m times

My point is that the best runners at the distance of 1km paradoxically won't run that distance. They'll either run 800m or 1500m.

Note: on the thread I yoinked that from a lot of people mentioned that the Boston Marathon is pretty elite even for amateur runners. So you'd shift things to the left a bit if you were taking an average of all marathons. But Eliud's performance is just next level however you look at it!!

She would have held the men's marathon world record as recently as 1963. Impressive - they make a distinction between the time recorded in a women only marathon and in a mixed marathon as obviously in a women's race you're effectively running solo while in a mixed marathon you may be able to pick up a pacemaker.

It is crazy that Peter Snell is still the NZ record holder at 800m over 50 years later - running on a grass track in Christchurch. Famously he ran enormous distances in training (apparently 160km per week) in order to run so fast at the shorter distances.

@KiwiPie Yeah - that amazed me. Walker used to run plenty of 800 metres as I recall and plenty of other very good runners since him.

Anyone remember when we used to have the New Zealand Games (I think that's what they were calle) - for a few year back in the 1970s. Used to get quite a few of the world's best athletes down here.

I've thought for quite a while that quite a cool marketing stunt would be for one of NZs cities to resurrect these - with a spin to draw good participants. That they would kick off at one second past midnight on 1st of January. So everyone who came and won would record the official world's best for the year in each event.

@Chris-B Snell ran a 2 hour 41 minute marathon 7 weeks before he broke the mile and 800m world records in the space of week.

You've been here for quite a while... but you didn't think that you'd find any pedantic arseholes? No correctors?
