They don't. But for incidents that go unpunished on a rugby field there are always two sides to a story.
 
As for a link - well I only have still photos but they tell a pretty good story. First two are smaller so you can see time and approach. Then the impact point blown up. Basically the same as Kepu.

I saw that on another site last week. Seems like a done deal.
 
However, these are sporting contracts, so maybe there is a plan. Douglas came back from Ireland after barely a year, and that was troubled with injury. Think we forked out $300K for the privilege and it nearly paid off - probably our best T5 forward around the park. Big loss early in the game.

On that last little bit ... similarly McCaw isn't so stupid as to trip someone but he did cop a yellow card a week or so ago for being just that. Spontaneous reactions happen.

We can all see McCaw holding the leg. I bet both players held each other as long as they could get away with all game. 
The fact is that Pocockwomble put his foot down and it connected with McCaws head. The onus is on him to take sufficient care that he doesn't do this. Heads are sacrosanct. Boots on heads usually draw a punishment. The severity of that punishment takes into account any mitigating factors. 
Remember Adam Thompson tapping a players headgear covered head lightly with his foot as notice to get it out of the way of the ball? Was correctly cited and punished. 
Horwill was cited and in most eyes got off very lightly. 
Can't see why (except for "politics" and not wanting to sully the final) this wouldn't at least attract a citing and get looked at carefully.

I'm not particularly wedded to the incident at all, NTA, other than to have a bit of fun (as "unfunny" as you find it to be) at the expense of the long running "Richie is a cheat - Our Davey is Lovely and better than him anyway, so there!" mantra chanted interminably by the kiddies on local rugby web sites, which automatically absolves the crowd favourite (who they portray as a saint) from all wrong. It commenced today at half time, focusing on Sir Richie and Nigel Owens.
