In order of importance from the current squad:

Kepu - who now qualifies under the Giteau rule - will go to France and has said he won't be making himself available (3 year contract with Bordeaux I believe). Can't blame him as he's not going to be making as much money as Giteau and Mitchell and therefore can't afford to give it up to fly across the world for training camps and such. Handy replacement on an EOYT.

AAC is going to Bordeaux as well i think, and has also basically indicated he's goneski.

Not sure if Mitchell and Giteau will be back after giving up a stack of cash for one more shot.

That is about 340 caps right there among 4 blokes - one of them a prop so more like 400 caps in terms of worth ;)

Quade is heading to Toulon - not that he contributed much - which is another 58 caps. Note: Quade is now unlikely to qualify for the Giteau rule. No fucks given from over here.

While a lot of these are backs, that is a heck of a lot of experience that will be unavailable, and subsequently the blokes coming through haven't had the opportunities. Then we've got other difficulties with e.g. Foley targeting 7s at the Olympics etc.

What is a small pool will be challenged next year. Hopefully the rest of the forward pack have a good off-season, get the surgery and rehab they need, and go again next year.

Cheika is the kind of coach who will wipe the slate clean in terms of form and start again next year.

But in that vein guys like Nic White as also leaving along with a few others who felt left out this year or last, or just in general got sick of the bullshit with the ARU. A lot of player movement OUT of Brisbane when their dimwit coach was reappointed too. Horwill gone, for example. And he's only 30.

We shall see I guess. There are some exciting young prospects on the chart now (McMahon etc) but I really think this period was about Cheika trying to win a RWC and next year there will be a different approach - hopefully a more unified direction from the Super franchises in terms of style of play to prepare these guys for what Cheika wants.
-

JUst re-watched the first half, and the try at the end.

Think it was NTA who said that Fardy shoulda earned a penalty? Anyway, not how I saw it, he was always 'on his head' and Pocock was bridging on players as he dpoes often...but the play leading to that try was reminiscent of the final play vs Ireland to complete the perfect season.
-

And that's the key - my comment was:

We'd won a couple of those earlier in the half and that one looked the cleanest of the lot.

I thought a couple of the earlier ones were more suspect - Pocock could easily have been judged in from the side at one of them, for example.

Owens was a bit inconsistent both ways there. e.g. he busted Moody for rolling into Genia's feet at one point in the match, but then similar scenario later let him go. At another ruck he didn't penalise Moody - correctly in this case - because Moore had pushed him back into the ruck.
-

It made me wonder, just after the droppie the camera cut to the engraver working away on the cup. If he was engraving "New Zealand" on it at that stage he has balls of steel, cause if Oz had come back I can't for the life of me work out how you apply Tippex to a gold trophy.
-

Who that? -

I have re-emerged to face Sunday, and there is a silly little grin on my face. I find myself walking around the house, giving little fist-bumps, and saying "you fucking beauty" under my breath. The kids are getting extra love, even if they are being annoying. I am at peace with the world.

What a test match!! I was nervous as fuck at kick-off, but what a start by us. Smacking the fuck out of them on defense, and then straight in to attack. Side to side stuff, middle of the field, back to the blind, constantly moving the point of attack. Our forward runners were brutal, and then Nonu was cutting them up. Some fantastic defense from Australia to hold us early. Then the "interesting" options started. The box kick in the 22, the grubber, the tap and go. Fuck!! get points!! We were dominating the game, but that doesn't mean much when the scoreboard doesn't move. That first try was a thing of beauty, great hands in tight spaces to set a guy in untouched, beautiful rugby. At half time I was feeling a bit better.

Aus started the 2nd half really well, they found some thrust, and Beale was running, then we get the ball back, SBW throws 2 offloads, and Nonu scores the best World Cup Final try of all time. And I made the mistake of relaxing. Aus get the ball, prove their start to the half as no fluke, and then fucking Ben Smith. Dumb as fuck. You knew they would score from that lineout. Then Genia and Beale played smart, and ran NMS around at the back. Great play to score the 2nd try, really good exploitation of the space at the back. FUCK!! 4 points! are you serious? We've bossed this game!

The Aussies definitely had the run at this point, but that's when leaders stood up, and boy did ours stand up. Dan with a monster kick for touch, then egging the boys on, Richie lifted, and the forwards went with him. It's like we stopped the game, took a breath, and took control again. Dan steps up, ridiculous drop goal, then 50m penalty, and it's 10 points. They get the ball back, but we sat back, gave them the ball, and whacked anyone who ran, beautiful. The last try was icing.

Elation!! off the couch! double fist pump!! celebratory glass of red (it was 4am) video calls from NZ, trying not to wake the kids. Watch presentations with silly grin.

To the Aussie fans, you should be proud of your boys. They were being out played, but the kept fronting, and kept fronting, and then suddenly the got a break, and they lifted a couple of levels. At the 65min mark they were balls deep in the game, and the boilover was on. You lost key players early which upset your plans, but nothing phased the team. Your coach and captain showed the perfect amount of grace and bitter disappointment in defeat, and didn't let that silly bitch goad them in to rash statements. An excellent campaign, and the building blocks of a very good team.

For us, the difference was the physicality of our forwards (and midfield), the lineout, and the strength of the scrum, which allowed us a lot of ball to play the game our way. Our field kicking was superior as well. Pretty much what we thought would happen at the start, but it's nice to see it pan out that way.

"everything is awesome!"
-

Its interesting in that way - you're going to lose a few experienced legends, while we have a shallower pool to pick from.

What I would like to see is Larkham in particular move the Brumbies away from Jakeball and get into Larkhamball. Guys like Lealiifano and Toomua are still suffering the stodge hangover from that era, when they could be so much better. Will be interesting to see what Cubelli adds to the Brumbies.

But that is a discussion for another time. I've now got to go find something to do, and we have no cat to kick.
-
