RWC: Japan v Samoa (Pool A)

So, in this pool, the current standings are :
1 - Japan (14 pts)
2 - Ireland (11 pts)
3 - Scotland (5 pts)I guess Ireland will beat Samoa with a bonus point : they will probably finish with 16 points (15 if they cannot score 4 tries or more).
Scotland will defeat Russia and earn a bonus point : they will have 10 points before their match against Japan.Possible scenarii :
Japan beat Scotland (with or without bonus point) : they finish first and Ireland second.
Japan draw with Scotland with no bonus points earned. They finish with 16 points and first because of their win over Ireland. Scotland are eliminated. If they get a bonus point, they finish first with 17 points.
Scotland win against Japan with a bonus point for 4 tries. They finish second and Japan are out of their World Cup if they get no bonus point or one bonus point. Japan finish first if they get two bonus points, Ireland second and Scotland third.
Scotland win against Japan with no bonus point. They finish second and Japan are eliminated. Scotland win against Japan with no bonus point but with Japan getting a bonus point for a deafeat by less than 7 points, Scotland are eliminated and Japan finish second with 15 points behind Ireland.So Carbery's decision to kick into touch at the hooter was not so dumb. He thus preserved a bonus point which keeps Ireland out of an elimination.
However, Ireland are in possible trouble if they do not get a win with a bonus point against Samoa. -

Good odds on offer for you then BT, sports bet have Japan paying $2.14 (v $1.71 ) against the Scots.

Ireland haven't brought that so far but they are more than capable of doing that. They did that in Dublin and we had no answers.
And that is my fear as well. Think France in 2007, especially when you factor in the ref's interpretations on the day.
Schmidt's criticism of Gardner was that he didn't let Ireland get away with what they usually do with many NH refs (e.g., being off feet for breakdown steals, offsides).

Townsend having a whinge about the late scrum penalty against Samoa

Certainly not sure that I agree with Townsend when he says ""I think it's an incredible call to be honest. It's something that has not been refereed and there's been an agreement that there is more latitude for scrum-halves putting the ball in because you are the team that's won the scrum." Shouldn't coaches know the laws?
From the laws:
"The scrum-half chooses which side of the scrum to throw in the ball. (I had no idea this was an option!)
The scrum-half holds the ball as shown in the diagram.
When both sides are square, stable and stationary, the scrum-half throws in the ball:- From the chosen side.
- From outside the tunnel.
- Without delay.
- With a single forward movement.
- At a quick speed.
- Straight. The scrum-half may align their shoulder on the middle line of the scrum, thereby standing a shoulder-width closer to their side of the scrum.
*So that it first touches the ground inside the tunnel."

Most of the funniest scenarios (three way tie on 15 points with Ireland being eliminated) are off the table with Ireland having a higher for and against than Japan.
Sounds like there might also be a Typhoon rolling in which could throw a cat amongst the pigeons
