I called yellow at the time.

Would love to see a different angle because on this viewing it looks like Hodge had the shoulder to the head - his own fault - rather thsn the other way round.

Speaking of homeless drunks how did they select the host broadcaster pool?

Karl Te Nana? Melodie Robson resurfacing? Mehrts? Sean Maloney?

These 3 are all involved as comms on the sevens circuit so I assume WR uses them for the RWC too. Maloney is the Aussie equivalent of Stevenson. And no, that's not a compliment.

@mikedogz those bottom two tries should be added to Tonga.

    Hopefully Reece won't score

Fair call. Well across Maloney's previous efforts, thus the tweflth man and ACC comparisons earlier. Bizzare choice for the premier tournament, doubly bizzare to put him in a cheerleading position for his own team which historically the HB have not done.

That Hodge tackle was a shocker. Appalling how variable the reffing of high shots is.

Before the start of the tournament they came out saying how everyone would be on the same page and very consistent on rulings and protocols in this area then first time it comes up they fluff it.
The proof for sanction was that the player hit had to leave the game after a shoulder to the head. That was an exact copy of the examples shown in the WR videos. An Owen Farrell special.
Hodge may yet get a post game card.

He bloody should based on that footage.

Four games in, and three have had refereeing whistle swallowing. I'm going to post on teh Arg thread soon, but by god the ref had an effect on the winner of that game. Very frustrating.

It was AFG so no surprises there.

Just saw the Hodge incident. How on earth did they miss that? It makes Scott Barrett’s shoulder on Hooper, where no one was injured, look like a cuddle in comparison. That Yato had to leave the field, concussed, was reason enough for the video official to have a second look at it. But nothing. If someone gets red in this tournament for a lesser offence (and it’s hard to think of a worse one) the judicial system will be exposed as an even bigger clown show than it already appears.

I only just read that the writer of the tweet was one of the team responsible with writing the protocol. If he doesn't get it then that reffing team need a bollocking. Don't think BOK will be reffing deep into the tournament based on that game.

Didn't I hear during the broadcast BOK did ask the TMO who said it was ok? Bit hard for him to take the full blame as it was hot on attack and not sure how close he was. Really should be pointing the finger at the TMO and AR IMO.

BOK owns the decisions, TMO is there for advice. Yes, the TMO put him wrong after he asked but he also was aware that the player went off for a HIA so should have double checked IMO.

I usually like Gardner but Argentina were robbed. Picamoles was clearly offside at least twice in kickable positions towards the end.

I have no idea how the SA winger didn’t get a YC. High tackle plus prevents quick ball with NZ almost certain to score. We benefitted from a couple of lucky calls too.

I was happy with our discipline yesterday. The easiest way to avoid the TMO lottery is no high tackles in the first place.

I think hodge is fine. Would not like to see that red carded. He clearly tries to wrap left arm and he didn’t deliberately lead with shoulder. Just bad luck. And those whining...would you be happy to lose an AB for that?

The issue is the bloody (apparnetly) inflexible rulings that have been trumpetted all over the place. I wasn't sure that ScoBar should have copped a card in a perfect world - given where the contact was - and I'm not sure what the difference is any more. That irish lock did exactly what ScoBar did - not even a penalty. Hodge inadvertanetly hits someone in the head with a shoulder adn they're off for an HIA -- nothing. SBW rolls into a second man in situation and cops a red.

It's the consistency. What is a red - does it need maliciousness? The current protocols are very clear, and I think if an AB did it and copped a red, I'd be frustrated , but understand the rules.

I am now in full grumpy old man mode, but the refereeing consistency (not just quality) is my big bugbear. Bah, bloody humbug.

    from the Grauniad:
World Rugby’s tackle directives could not be any clearer about a collision like this. Hodge did not use his arms, his shoulder collided with Yato’s head, and, since they had both been standing up, there were no mitigating circumstances.

Australia’s Reece Hodge caught Fiji’s Peceli Yato in the head with a shoulder and didn’t use his arms, World Rugby’s tackle directives could not be clearer – yet no action was taken

Fiji have officially complained directly to the citing officer.
Trouble is that I think he can only cite for a RC and they will wriggle out of that somehow. In the past there have been 'off field YCs' haven't there?

If there is any whining it is about the so called clear directives that are getting applied haphazardly.

My complaint is that we lose a player for a mistimed challenge yet in other games it is “OK”.

WR even made videos to explain their (IMO) quite hard ruling directive yet their employees seemingly didn’t watch them.

Hodge cited. He’s gone I’d say for at least the pool games.
