Alternative to Red Cards?
-
If WR are to clamp down on contact to the head, that's OK.
But for normal rugby gone wrong (E.g. Benjamin Fall & Tu'ungafasi in last years France test series) that should come in a category between red or yellow.
I'm not particularly fussed about early reds for proper red offences, and its effect on that particular match.
-
They also point out that most teams will know their numbers so may be willing to push the boundaries more, esp late in a game. Obviously nobody plays for a red though.
The problem with a red sanction is the penalty can be 80 mins game time whist down to 14, or 1 min. Hardly equitable if 2 players commit the same offence - one in the first minute and another on the opposing team in the last.
No easy solution that I can see - other than don't be an idiot and get a red, or if you do, do it late in the game.

for serious technical infringements - e.g. Barrett
that's an interesting way to word it. He shoulder charged him in teh head!!
I've been banging the drum for a while that rugby has got too liberal with the cards. I would prefer the threshold for both cards rolled back a bit, but i am very much aware i am a voice from the past that doesn't gel with current thinking.
I would have been happy with a yellow for that on the weekend. Hopper played on. Reds should be serious violence only.
Rugby is fucked enough without adding more grey areas to it.
-
@mariner4life That's what ended up happening, but I'm pretty doubtful Barrett's intention was to do that. I.e. that he would have regretted not being more effective by waiting till Hooper was on the ground and punching him in the face.

i have watched it a few times now, and i can't tell what else he was trying to do? There was no other outcome available. Dumb act.
But. The impact was minimal. Bin him for bin a silly bugger. And that's my solution. Same cards, just less of them.
-
@mariner4life Who knows - I haven't been able to easily find a video showing a few more seconds of where Barrett has come from - just a second of slow-mo.
I'd like to think there's not too many psychopaths running around international rugby and that Barrett's mistimed a tackle and braced for impact rather than lining Hooper up for a visit to the hospital.

To me there was little intent, just clumsy. He barely hit him even though Hoopah screamed like he'd been stabbed

brace for impact? You cantabs are hilarious. You are supposed to start with denial, then go to anger, not the other way around

@mariner4life Cantab? Get fucked JAFA!

oh, i forgot, you put up a Chinese Wall at this time of year. Arms length, honest!
-
@mariner4life That's not the first thing you've forgotten, now - is it?
Don't make me play the music!!!
-
well, to be fair, your plastic franchise and the cantabs seem to have interchangeable players, sooooo
but we are derailing Tim's thread. Less cards!!!
Rugby is not American Football. The games, the way they are played, and the nature of the hits taken are very very different. Stop over-officiating in an effort to stop lawsuits.
-
@canefan I think it bent his head a bit. I get that SB was trying to halt the momentum of the tackle rather than actually tackle Hooper. But it was a real low % shot in terms of the hit he could apply on Hooper. For all that I don't like Hooper he is a tough SOB, so I think that yell was genuine rather than playing hurt etc.

I’ve always been in the camp that a red card is a red to the player and out of the game, but a yellow to the team and they get a replacement after 10 minutes.
It makes sense in my head so much I can’t see why anyone would have an issue with it.
They player is penalised, the team are penalised but not excessively so, if it was really dodgy the player will cop a lengthy ban which rules out the mythical select a player to maim key opposition players.

Also, on the subject of red cards, there seem to be a lot going on around here at the moment. I mustn’t be logged on at the right moment to see what causes them.
Some people are treating threads like DMs and some are trolling. Various mods have given temp bans to reduce the amount of pruning we have to do.
Most users aren't a problem, some just refuse to listen. One user was given three bans to reign in the stupid, so strike three was out.
Lots of good threads at the moment, it's a shame when they get ruined by people basically talking about how big their dick is.

I'd add in a clause that prohibits replacing a red-carded player in the instances of deliberate, malicious foul play. The referee would have to see clear intent to injure to invoke this clause.
So Barrett gets to be replaced, because his actions weren't deliberate/maliciously targeting Hooper's head. Same goes for the high tackle that just slipped up a bit, or the challenge in the air that goes horribly wrong. But the eye-gouge or the punch to the head results in a straight red with no sub, because fuck those guys right off.
-
@barbarian I guess I prefer dealing with that at the judiciary ... if they get found to have done that then they get long bans.
I think I still prefer that they can be replaced because it’s one psycho rather the whole team. Let’s say that Barrett was deliberately trying to maim Hooper with his shoulder charge. Is that really less than an eye gouge? What if a player gets done for an eye gouge and then on review they discover it was an accident but he’d been sent off 1 minute into a game?
Not saying I’m right, just scenarios that make me prefer that the player can be replaced.
