@Chris 100% agree. How can a player be fully committed to a franchise knowing he is leaving the following year. If the Canes let this happen they will look like massive chumps.
How is it any difference to a player knowing he is leaving to go over seas the following year. They still play hard for the team they are paid by

First, nothing confirmed yet.
Second, it's odd that they allow Jordie - not exactly someone who has earned his stripes in SR yet - this kind of contracting flexibility. I can understand that they allow that flexibility to the likes of Retallick, Whitelock and BB, but why Jordie? To me it doesn't seem that Jordie should have as much bargaining power as his brother. Tell him to make a choice now!
Then this:
The option for Jordie Barrett to switch likely comes with a desire to play with Beauden if he didn't take the sabbatical in 2021. He stated his desire to play with his brother as a big reason behind his move to the Hurricanes for his first Super Rugby contract in 2017. If Beauden Barrett did take the sabbatical, then Jordie Barrett would likely stay at the Hurricanes, but he would also have the option to join one of the other three Super Rugby franchises.
Is he a little boy who can't play without his brother? Geez, grow up.
Option to join one of the other three franchises? Are we canning one? Or does the journo mean other than Blues and Hurricanes?
If they give a player like Jordie the flexibility that was previously only awarded to very senior ABs, where will this end? Will every SR player get that flexibility in future? This just isn't good for the franchises at all!

Haha a few people getting their knickers in a twist over this. Why shouldn’t he want to play with his brother? No different than a player wanting to be based in a particular city near family or play under a certain coach or any other readon for choosing a team to sign for.
As far as i can see he hasn’t been offered what BBBR, whitelock and BB have been. He hasn’t been given a sabbatical he just hasn’t finalised the super rugby component of the deal. I don’t see anything wring with that. -
@Hooroo Because a player that heads overseas has usually done so after giving his all for their jersey over a long period of time. Case in point - Matt Proctor who busted his ass this year knowing he had limited time left in the jersey that he was loyal to for so long. There is no way you can show the same commitment knowing you are leaving for another franchise.
I'm just imagining how pissed off Dane Coles will be. bahaha

@Canes4life You would have to wonder how much this pisses off the Canes players.I will play for you this year but I don't really want to, I want to play for another team against you guys after that.Just go now ffs.
Also does it not hold franchises to ransom sign a 2 year contract with an outclause to play at another franchise,So the SR team feels that have to pander to him to try and keep him.
Nah you don't want to play for a team just leave.
Canes put him on the Bench or don't pick him. -
I've been trying to find the article I read it in, but haven't found it.
In one of the articles discussing BB signing with the Blues and a potential move from Jordie to the Blues, it was pointed out that the Blues are the only franchise in which NZR has a stake, while the other franchises are completely privately owned. The author suggested that NZR's role in players signing with Blues in these circumstances might be considered - I can't remember the words used - as a conflict of interests (?) and that the private owners of the other franchises wouldn't be happy.

Canes put him on the Bench or don't pick him.Hahaha that is idiotic. Why would they sign him only to bench him or leave him out all together. Some people need to get a grip.
Wasn’t this same thing discussed recently with Akira and Reiko talking about potential moves the other direction if the Blues didn’t sort their shit out? But this is Jordie and he is over rated apparently.
Really this is all speculation at this stage. This “option” to switch teams might not be an option at all. Maybe it is just a one year deal with the Canes. No different to any other one year deals except he has committed to NZ for longer.
