Who pays for the Crusaders academy funding? Is it financed by NZ rugby? If so, I find that whole episode really strange.

It's no different to the multitude of non-NZ players who've represented Super Rugby teams since 1996 and been paid by the NZRU. The academy is a shared resource but if you allocated a share by player it's probably more expensive to pay a contract. A few off the top of my head below.

    Fa'atau
    Decrezceni
    Caucau
    D Ioane
    Tanaka
The English lock who came to Canterbury and the Chiefs poached, circa 2012
    Vunipola
    Nadolo
    Ardron
    Haskell

pretty sure Debreczeni can play for NZ though (born in Auckland) and if he werent made of glass, given the names being thrown around when D-Mac went down, his name mighta been thrown about too....

    @shark

I see that argument but feel like it is different to an academy, which should be purely about development of NZ talent.

I could be wrong, but I think some of those examples (or at least some others from the Chiefs at least) are funded by cooperative agreements.

Also, he's not a PI player - he's an Australian. There's no development of the 2nd tier argument to be made either.

At best, it's an attempted poach; at worst, it's pissing away money to develop an Aussie player.

Now, if the money is the Crusaders alone; that's fine. However, if it's funded by NZ rugby, somebody should have to explain that investment.

If it's NZRU money, how is itr any different to paying James Haskell, Tyler Ardron etc? Playing Super rugby here is going to be as beneficial - if not moreso - to a guys' development as being in an academy. At least if a guy has been in an academy, someone has thought at some stage that they might play for NZ.

Yeah Frost struggled to start for his club side so was not really going to hang round.

@98blueandgold And in the meantime kept a local promising player out of the academy.

So no Jordan, Enari, Funnell or Cameron. Hunt seems to be preferred again. Last ditch effort to re-sign him?

I am guessing no Jordan because of his injury? Didn't see the game last night. What did he injure?

A much less speculative reason could be that Hunt is their 2nd best first five-eighth. Why leave him in NZ and opt for a player that's not even up to SR level?

    No Harmon either.

Strange not going is an interesting one after missing the squad last night - injured or demoted?

Jordan will be out due to injury - he limped off immediately he damaged something, so presumably knew it was a strain or tear rather than a knock.

On the injured list at present: Franks, Faingaanuku, Jordan, Perry - plus Dagg and Mataele gone for the season.

@Chris-B .. and Sanders (also out for the season IIRC).

I vaguely remember Strange limping when he left the field in the Lions game (not sure).

Not sure that's right. Pretty sure Mitch had the bench for the first few games. Then Cameron had a run of about four games - including a start vs the Waratahs and a cameo where he came on (against the Canes?) and his only significant contribution was a terribly sliced penalty touchfinder.

Since then it's been back to Mitch. I'd guess it's 7-4 or possibly 6-5 to Mitch in terms of appearances.

@Chris-B We sure need a quality young First Five next year if Hunt Goes.We need to bring through the next Mo'unga. Cameron even if he improves will not be that sort of quality.

Who's coming off that CBHS production line?

I guess Fergus Burke is in the frame somewhere since he's been brought down from the north?

    Oct 4, 2017

Watch: Aaron Cruden's brother duels the next Beauden Barrett

Watch: Aaron Cruden's brother duels the next Beauden Barrett

The crossing of paths between Stewart Cruden and Fergus Burke could prove to be an historic one in the future.
