So St Kent's has finally joined other Auckland schools by accepting the new agreement.
Any further poaching of opposition talent in New Zealand has been essentially banned as part of a ground-breaking new Secondary Schools rugby agreement. On Monday, representatives of 10 schools in Auckland's 1A grade rugby competition met to decide a new set to standards as a result of the proposed boycott of St Kentigern College for their alleged unfair recruitment practices. According to a statement released on Tuesday morning, they've agreed to the following terms: - Not permit any form of player recruitment or inducement to attract a student from another school’s first XV rugby team that is part of an NZRU sanctioned competition. - Not offer a student from another schools first XV Rugby team (that is part of an NZRU sanctioned competition) a partial or full scholarship to attend their school. - Any new to school player who has transferred from an NZRU 1st XV sanctioned competition will be stood down for six 1A competition games, and any potential semi-final or final matches..
Great, they can't poach from other 1st XV teams in NZRU sanctioned competitions, but will this lead to an increase in poaching from the Islands?

Great, they can't poach from other 1st XV teams in NZRU sanctioned competitions, but will this lead to an increase in poaching from the Islands?
I wonder if there is a section in the policy that allows for students who move for family reasons to not be subject to these conditions? Say a father gets a new job in Auckland in March and the family move from Hawkes Bay and the son was in the Hastings Boys 1st XV - is that boy banned from playing six games and the semi and final?

@Nepia What you describe is not recruiting, inducing to attract or offering a scholarship. It would be great if it's spelled out explicitly, but it doesn't sound as if these rules apply to players that move with their family for the reasons you mention.

TBF, we've only seen a press release and not the policy so it might actually specifically address this.

@akan004 Nothing wrong. The South African schools are either in the middle or at the end of their season, so have already played quite a bit of rugby. The NZ schools participating in the World Schools Festival hadn't even started their preseason yet and only played one or two pre-tournament games in Dubai (on their way to SA) against other non-SA schools.
It was the same last year.

@akan004 Pretty stock-standard. Ive toured SA with firstXVs a couple of times, pretty even except for a few 'big' schools both literally and figuratively. Grey College, Paul Roos, Paarl Boys are full-on even compared to St Kents etc. And have always dominated NZ schools. A couple of other reason possibly - It is widely reported that doping is also an issue is schoolboys rugby over there (but who knows?) and also im pretty sure the age is different but not 100% sure that its u19 over there. but anyway not a surprise and does not impact as they mover up the levels.

@Higgins I just checked some fixture lists. I was wrong, they're not at the end of their season. Most fixtures/results lists start half Feb/early March, but they may have very long seasons. I've seen lists finishing in August. Not sure whether the teams on these lists are all 1st XV's, and how many different competitions there are. They seem to play a lot of tournaments/festivals, too.
By the way, interesting to read that player poaching is also an issue in SA.

Just saw someone on Facebook ask exactly the same question about the results of the NZ schools at the World Schools Rugby Festival. The answer he got from someone from South Africa was that basically all the big schools draft the good players from all over the country and grant them full scholarships, just to play rugby. It's seen as a pathway to professional rugby.

Great news for rugby fans. Sky will this year broadcast its Land Rover 1st XV rugby season on Sky Sport, moving from the Rugby Channel and therefore making the games accessible to all Sky Sport subscribers.The 2019 Land Rover 1st XV rugby season is looking to be bigger than ever with Sky Sport covering 33 Land Rover 1st XV rugby matches LIVE plus a further four matches featuring New Zealand Schools and NZ Barbarian Schools.Sky has broadcast the New Zealand Schools vs Australian Schoolboys match at the end of the season every year since 2010, and will do so again this year. Sky also supports the New Zealand Schools Rugby Sevens tournament every year by filming and producing the Condor Sevens tournament, which features over 100 teams participating from schools all over New Zealand.... and then they forget to include the NZ Schools v Australia Schools in the list. I assume it should be the last game on the list

Eligible Age of First XVs in question
Are there some changes ahead for First XV rugby? College Sport Media has obtained an email from Steve Lancaster, NZR’s head of participation and development, that outlines a tightening up of age and eligibility rules. At the heart of the matter is that in NZR’s view, all open-age college competitions across the country are classified as Under 19 competitions, mostly due to the fact that players who are already 18 as of 1 January are eligible to take part. While this is reasonable, other NZR rules then prevent Under 16 (or Year 10) players from playing in those same competitions. To get around that, some unions and competition organisers have classified their competitions as U18, with dispensations for players already 18 years old. However NZR’s directive would appear to put an end to that.The rationale for these rules are sensible. In an age where player safety is becoming an increasing focus, addressing the physical and mental disparities that exist between developing and developed bodies is at the forefront of that. Differences in size, like between props and locks, and half and fullbacks, is an accepted part of the game but NZR’s view is that older players are better equipped to deal with those rather than a situation of a 19-year-old prop versus a 15-year-old halfback. While this is unlikely to have an effect in the major First XV competitions, an outright ban on players who aren’t 16 when the school year starts could have dire consequences for the large number of schools up and down the country that struggle to put out a First or Second XV each week. When participation numbers are falling that could be a further death knell for the game in some areas. Fortunately, with the college season almost underway, NZR have for this year decided to enforce an interim solution requiring players already 18 to obtain a dispensation to play while they investigate options for future years. But it seems likely that changes will be in place for 2020. Whether those are enforcement of the current rules – e.g. Under 16s cannot play – or dispensations required for those older than the norm for school will have to be seen.
