    @jc

James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, Bernard Edwards, Bootsy Collins, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter.... and although it wasn’t his primary instrument, Jimi Hendrix could shred most rock bassists under the table. I’ve seen Stanley Clarke many times, but not in the past 25 years. He was pretty spectacular.

Edit: And how did I forget Miroslav Vitouš??? I’m sure there are many other great ones I can’t remember right now.

James Jamerson. Guarantee every ferner woulda heard his smooth grooves on at least one song given how awesome ( and prolific ) he was.

For all the hits he played on, he might be one of the least recognized big-name bandleaders in popular music history. Smokey Robinson was primarily responsible for the direction of the Motown style, but Jamerson gave them their sound. He’s amazing.

@salacious-crumb I guess if we’re going to talk about influence we should be throwing Carol Kaye into the mix as well SC. I remember being blown away that the woman who played on the Beach Boys biggest hits and River Deep, Mountain High was also on the Mission Impossible theme and a member of Zappa’s Mothers. Check out the listings on her website: https://www.carolkaye.com/www/library/basshits.htm

The story about JJ and the session for 'What's going on' is a classic. Too pissed to stand up so lay flat on the floor and improvised one of the most amazing basslines ever.

I guess I should post the list of 2018 gigs - a relatively quiet year...

    • The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (only a couple of songs, as I'd double-booked, and then had to hurry onwards to the next item on the list...)
      The Rolling Stones
Future Islands, Cat Power, The National
      Nadine Shah, Lorde, The xx
Sylvan Esso, Father John Misty, Beck, Bjork
      The National
The Black Lips, Courtney Barnett, St Vincent, Patti Smith, Nick Cave
      Death Cab for Cutie
      Low
      The Naked and Famous
      The Gaslight Anthem
      Phoebe Bridgers
      Jose Gonzalez

I also had tickets for a couple more, but missed them...

    • Nine Inch Nails - more than a little gutted I forgot about this until it was too late
Marlon Williams - simply couldn't be arsed that night

Nick Cave was as good as ever... and had Kylie Minogue out for Where the Wild Roses Grow... the farking reaction of the british when that happened... absolutely mental. Never seen so many hipsters and the such absolutely lose their shit for a pop singer.
The Stones - I was a little underwhelmed... but never really been a big fan.

Can't believe this. I have 2 tickets to Auckland, return flights from Melbourne and accomodation all booked as well as domestic return flights for my brother for what was going to be the greatest surprise birthday for him ever. Hoping credit card insurance covers something. Bloody devastating, I wonder if slipknot m8ght come on their own?

    Ah, that sucks.

Although a bit of schadenfraude if I'm honest about all the straight edge bollocks he wanks on about.

I'm sure they will be back though. They are (usually) the ultimate professionals.

Forgot to add ... can't believe Slipknot

    1. Are not considered big enough to get their own billing in NZ
    2. Would agree to be a supporting act.

    They headline festivals over here!
