@antipodean It's not odd that he was nominated, but he wasn't the only one bringing a team back to the top, and winning back-to-back titles in Super Rugby should have topped it IMO.
Only if you view everything through crusaders tinted glasses like you do.
Alama took a team that was getting thrashed by North Harbour just last season to beating Canterbury twice, and dropping only one game.
It was a remarkable turnaround and he deserves the plaudits.
Razor has done very well with Crusaders, much better than Blackadder, but he took a good team to a very good team in a very weak competition.
Mitre 10 is a lower standard, but there isn’t as much variability between teams. No Aussies to thrash for example.
Says someone who looks at everything through Acukland and Blues tinted glasses.
To be fair, it's been hard to see through those for quite some time due to all the cracks!
I agree with @Kirwan Much easier to take a good team and culture and keep them going a second year than sweep up the bones off the floor and then go and win the comp

Individual awards in a team game are stupid anyway

I know. Just wanted to remind everyone that Waikato won the best loser comp

Alama took a basket case team that was on the verge of relegation, rebuilt from the ground up, and managed to get a team spirit and resilience instilled that hasn't been sighted in Auckland teams for decades. Not only that, they won respect from the generally disinterested public. An amazing achievement.
It was a lower level than Super. However, I'd argue there were a few coaches who could win the comp with the Super cattle that the Crusaders had. By comparison, I don't know if other coaches would have been able to achieve what the Auckland coaches did, in teh time they had, with the players they had.

@taniwharugby I seem to remember that the Kel Tremain Memorial used to be awarded to one of the winners of the other individual categories on the night, and they never publically announced the nominees prior to the awards evening. A bit like the Halberg supreme award.
So have a male and female POTY award, and together with the other winners (SR, M10 Cup, Tom French), one of them wins the overall award.

Clone Army Hypothetical:
XV Brodies vs XV Sextons.
Who wins?

@salacious-crumb Brodie’s for sure

Just to clarify, who was AB player of the year? Or wasn't there one?
