@rotated Poorly constructed joke on the idea that the ABs choked (let alone like dogs) in 95 rather than got beaten by a team with the irresistible force of history (and Suzie) on its side, a superior pack and the one defence in the tournament that could keep the ABs tryless.

against players that were vomiting on the sidelines.

Whether they were poisoned is a different matter, but they were sick (for whatever reason).

The 1996 series win in SA more than made up for the disappointment of the 1995 RWC final.

2007, 99 & 2003 in that order are RWCs I care not to remember.

1991 we were never good enough, 1995 we were, but didnt.

1995 will sadly always have an asterix for Kiwi fans - illness, of which is undisputed.
1995 will be remembered by other fans as Kiwis claiming a conspiracy of poisoning.

These days it is easy to forget how difficult it was to win there. '96 was our 'Ireland' moment

Ah I see the choking like dogs line was canefan’s contribution thus the confusion.

1999 is the only one I’d even begin to consider as a choke and even there it was more a case of the team being understimulated rather than overstimulated and freezing.

@mariner4life You're sort of underlining my (admittedly weak) joke.

The ABs didn't choke. They were beaten. And yes, it was bloody close. But injury time drop goals likely wouldn't have been necessary if Bevan hadn't kept them in it by disallowing Kruger's clear try and calling Small back for a forward pass that wasn't.

@snowy Exactly. '95 wasn't one of the ones you choked away. The official explanation for that loss is poisoning.

@bovidae That series still hurts more than all the other humiliations which followed.

Really? Official by whom? Food poisoning, or getting sick from something you ate, doesn't have to be being deliberately "Suzied" was my point.

@rotated Listen, I got as much mileage out of the choking bit as anyone, but I'm not sure its fair on either the ABs or their opponents. I'd argue that 1999 game was just one of those miraculous things, where the French just suddenly remembered how to create space.

Hmmm. The ABs have lost to SA, Aus, Eng, Fra, Wales (60+ years ago), and now Ireland (who have also beaten everybody else recently). Probably forgotten someone but It is still quite an impressive record. Lions, mixed teams, etc, excluded.

I just preferred to be able to count them on one hand (Cantabs still can). Hansen has to wear that.

My first real memories of watching the ABs and actually caring about the result was the 95 world cup. I remember being obsessed with Lomu and saving all of the newspaper articles about him, so have fond memories of that despite what happened in the final.

Oohhh. 2007 was THE choke for me. In terms of tournament favouritism. The others were at least understandable.

Sure 1999 was an in game choke (14 point up).

No you haven't. During the 2003 Centenary of All Black rugby NZ hosted tests from the FIVE indivudual nations that had beaten us. Ireland have become number 6.

Understand the "favourites" bit but what constitutes a choke? Having better skills but failing due to a mental breakdown?

Was in the stands for both of those mentioned.

1999 - our only real choke I reckon. Really thought we had it at half time, mentally switched off against a talented opposition, who switched on.
2007 was just a fucking joke. It wasn't a choke. Wayne Barnes was either incompetent (and shouldn't have been there), or a cheat.

We are probably a similar age. Didn’t feel like NZ lost that World Cup - mostly because of Lomu.

In hindsight it’s worth remembering we had won the America’s Cup a month earlier and the WRC thing was bubbling. So we were feeling pretty chipper about ourselves as a sporting nation and weren’t even sure there would be 4th RWC so there wasn’t too much to be upset about. Fond memories...
