Cooper has selected an extra prop (O'Neill), probably because of the uncertainty over Hames and Moli.

As mentioned in the SR thread, I am disappointed for Tucker, who had a great M10 season. Perhaps his injury is serious, or he will be picked up by another team. Hoeata was a permanent food bill this year. I have big hopes for McWhannell.

Sowakula did OK without setting the world on fire but I can understand his selection as a no.8.

Halfbacks - rumours about Roe were unfounded.

1st 5s - Debreczeni's selection rumour was correct. MMac still gets himself a spot though.

Midfield - no Tupaea surprises me. The Chiefs better have him signed though.

Outside backs - great to have Stevenson back and Nanai-Seturo. I don't really consider Wainui a specialist winger as he lacks pace. Moeakiola played for the Sunwolves but I didn't really watch them (apart from the Chiefs game). I would have preferred a NZ player.

agree with your comments. Tucker was on fire so that's a shame. Quinn over Bailyn seemed like a no brainer - but not sure how far back contracts are signed..

Although it doesn't really happen these days would be nice to see some reward of players with the catchment zone being rewarded - by that I mean Sevu over jap guy.. but heard coach on radio this morning saying htat contract was signed before Sevus fell over.

Looks like NPC form did not count for much in the Super Squads, particularly the Chiefs, as most deal sealed long ago. Is that a good thing for NZ rugby? What happens to the form players who missed out?

It feels like the Chiefs have dug themselves into a hole with multi-year signings of players who have not delivered even at NPC level, while better options in their own franchise miss out on Super rugby altogether.

How can someone with form like James Tucker or Quinn Tupaea miss out on a contract? I just hope Sevu Reece makes the sevens squad now.

Pretty gutting to see players brought in from overseas while form local players miss out!

I doubt Sevu will make NZ 7s as the reason he isn't in a Super Squad is that he towels up the misses, isn't it?

@williethewaiter Any update on Tucker's injury?

Cooper couldn't justify picking too many new Naki players after their season.

I assume Tupaea is on a development contract - which will likely see him get game time due to injuries.

I agree that it's annoying that overseas players get signed before the form local players - they should be a last resort.

What's the bet that the Chiefs develop Jack with the weird last name for a year or two and then he goes home and plays for the Wallabies.

@nepia Going by what was published (in the HBT?), he is sitting the SR season out - although he is symptom free - and he'll be back for the Magpies in 2019. I guess he'll have to earn a new SR contract by having a good and injury free Mitre 10 Cup season next year.

@arhs Someone said on here that Quinn Tupaea was offered a wtg spot at the Blues and turned it down. maybe he does not feel he's ready and is on a development contract with the Cheifs or is trying out for sevens?

@daffy-jaffy Or maybe he's loyal and wants to stay as far away from the Blues as possible. 😉

I'm sure the Chiefs have signed him, as they had for Nanai-Seturo previously, and he'll be involved in the larger squad but focus on the U20s.

    @bovidae

If that’s true, I’ll be much happier as it’ll show that we are developing players too. When/do they release the development signings?

Feel like it lacks a the classy, polished names of some of the other teams (they don't have 14 AB loose forwards like the Highlanders for instance)

    BUT

In a world cup year, with the whole system geared up to fire around late October, that's not necessarily a bad thing, at least until June.

@mariner4life Your first choice backline should be really good.

Maybe if we had two ALBs (or one ALB and one Maori Jesus) it would but we have a huge whole in the midfield, so much so that I mentioned Wainui as a starting midfielder earlier in the thread. 😱

plenty of wheels for sure. If they can stay fit they'll be good, and there is a lot of hard workers picked up front (from what i know of them anyway) so we should get ball.

I think we'll finish 3rd in the conference, 2nd if we get a bit of injury luck.

    That's the key point, really.

In a RWC year all bets are off because you know all the senior ABs are going to have their eyes on another prize.

yea, you look at your mob, and your 5 best forwards probably should barely play until April.

The flip side being i think your 10 will be playing his ass off all season.

How many SR games are the AB's being made to have off?

Any word on contract lengths? Specifically: Manu and Stevenson?

I haven't seen anything but you can assume a minimum of 2 years.
