@frank he's played 66 tests for the AB's and his kicking has cost us how many?
Can't see them changing too much TBH.
Beauden's been kicking alright this year hasn't he?
When he first came on the scene he was deadly accurate.
The past couple of years he wavered a bit - but, this year he seemed like he was back to being pretty good. I can't remember him having too many bad games off the tee?
Lets hope that last night doesn't knock his confidence, because I'm doubtful that we're going to want to play Jordie or DMac in the 15 jersey, simply because Beauden has a few off nights.
For what it's worth, I never expected them to switch kickers during the match. With all the training and sports psychology these guys are exposed to these days, you'd expect them to pretty much go through their routines and every kick to be a 99% independent event.
Switching kickers would be a bit like a pro golfer storming off the course after making double bogey on the first hole.
-
Then there is a problem with the psychology, because as Hansen said last night in the presser, it's a team game. Personally, I think all players should be honest enough with themselves to say, "X is generally a higher percentage kicker than me anyway, and tonight I'm not quite hitting them right enough, so away they go".
And, that's certainly true of anyone in the leadership group, which Barrett must be, not to mention Read of course.
-
As the dust settles, there's not much more to do than stomp up and down and pout and frown about our goal kicking last night.
BB should stay at 10, and handing over kicking duties ensures Dmac or JB must start, that's not ideal. Neither is changing kickers mid game.
Despite the mantra that goal kicking doesn't lose games, kicks slightly in front need to go over, fuck the last one to tie things up at least!
But there's no easy fix but for some more coaching, eh Beauden?
-
@gt12 But at what point would you bail?
When he lined up that last kick I think he had 2/5 and one had hit the post. Normally you'd hope to have 4/5, but 3/5 isn't a disaster.
He's on his home ground and nine times out of ten he's going to make that last kick.
I don't think you want your key play maker wetting his pants just because of a bit of adversity.
-
In true TSF fashion, I haven't seen the game yet
But, your position has an equally strong counter, which is that he should have made the previous ones, and he's (I'm pretty sure) a lower percentage kicker than others out there, so on days when things haven't been that good, there is an obviously better choice.
Having said that, two hit the post right? I think those mitigate things a lot, because if they go through, it's a different game.
I was only replying to your point about a professional golfer, because the nature of rugby is very different to golf.

Squire will miss the rest of the RC. Hope they bring in Akira.
Fifita got a couple of meat pies for Welly but his comments about not liking to do hard work might cost him an AB career. Not the wisest choice of words from him.

@gt12 I don't think the psychology is too much different.
If you're a top golfer who just made a double-bogey, you need to be able to stand on the tee and expect to nail your drive.
If you're Federer and just served a couple of double faults to lose a game - you're not wanting to be worrying about another one when you start your next game.
If Beauden is our designated kicker for the game - I want him to be striding forward wanting to take the kick and expecting to get it. Unless maybe he's missed 5/5 and he thinks maybe this isn't my night.
-
I agree about that, but at what point does confidence become arrogance? The way to beat us is usually via a couple of easy tries, plus a couple fo excellent tries, plus our kickers having an off night. You have to get past 22 points and defend well, and the Boks and Aus are probably the only teams that can give up 6 tries and win against us. So, without watching the game I think it's probably a valuable lesson - even if it is just for the team to reconsider the approach to kicking, and get Barrett to perfect his technique - he's still too variable off the tee and I think many of us have been predicting that we'd lose a game as a result. To be fair, I thought the same about Cruden, and Barrett will only develop by losing - it's a great stat about Jordan which drove him to get better, so hopefully Barrett will use it accordingly.
At the end of the day, we don't develop many clutch 80-90% kickers nowadays (although I think that Dmac is relatively good at this, at least for the Chiefs). Anyway, just one more reason to miss Carter.

Anyone heard any good talk back today ? It always makes for excellent radio when the ABs lose. My favourite was some old bloke who said Richie McCaw personally let him down and he compared his captaincy of the Waimate under 21s or whatever to playing in front of 60,000 hostile Afrikaaners and what he would have done much better than Richie did.

I think if all his missed kicks were out wide I'd feel the same way, but on a night when he's missing kicks in close I'd want him to go to DMac and say, here you kick the last one because I'm 50/50 at best at getting this.

I can't wait for the 1014 Rugby show on Sky tomorrow. It will be interesting to see their analysis of the match.
A big win if the All Blacks maintain some semblance of defensive alignment, don't give up two intercepts and kick the majority of their shots at goal.
Still, we need to account for teams that have "amazing line-speed" in defence. That's what those cross field kicks against a narrow defensive pattern are supposed to achieve.
One only needs to look at the stats to see this should have been a thumping of epic proportions.
-
@mn5 majority of what I heard was very reasonable...I think the nutters call when it's dark.
Mexted reckons it was the best game ever.
Interesting thing for me is that unusually we dominated stats, scored more tries and lost...be interesting to see if SA can back it up, or it was an anomaly as the stats would suggest.

My impression of last light nights test.
Was that the Hurricanes that played the springboks last night...? -

To be fair most of the social network in NZ has been quite complimentary to the Springboks..
Just the odd few blaming B.B and super rugby time nature of the way we were trying to play the game..
Personally I thought we were very loose and too keen use ball off the top of the lineout which suited the rush defence the Boks were using.
Would like to have seen us drive a lot more from lineouts which we used to good effect close to the line.
Finally on Beauden Barrett,he’s quite the talent, but needs to take responsibility of drop kick situations and needs to work bloody harder on his goalkicking moving forward.Watched the last 10 minutes of the Dragons v Souths NRL elimination game last night,Adam Reynolds took responsibility drop kicking 3 goals in the last 7 minutes..took control of the situation and that’s all I ask from BB
