Mose was a beast for the Saders.

Henry brought him in around that transition time when Collins was moved from 8 to 6 and he was looking for a new no8 trying several options - Rush, Mose, Bates, Lauaki, Newby - before ultimately settling with Rodders. Mose was decent but wasn’t given the time to develop as an AB for whatever reason. He was only 23 when he first made the ABs.

Crikey, some ordinary names in that list.

Didn't Craig Green leave NZ after the RWC in '87 for Italy?

How good was Mose Tuiali'i, and how much potential did he have? I'm a bit hazy on him.

He was no Sam Broomhall .

    But then, who was?

I couldn't work out why Mose never made it. He had every physical gift needed to be a great Test 8, but it never clicked

Like the Jasin Goldsmith call. Where did he go anyway? Was it an extremely early injury enforced retirement?

There was a kid called Brendon Daniel. Ridiculously promising BOP winger at the onset of the prefessional era I think, who went overseas at something like 20 and as far as I know never returned to play but nor did he make it wherver he went, surprisingly. Anyone else remember him?

Another in that sort of category was an open side from Canterbury called Greg Smith in around 1994/95. Crazy promise then disappeared.

Didn't Daniel have a long career with Saracens (I think).

Didn't Greg Smith go out with Melodie Robinson before "Canterbury Steve Walsh"?

I had a good old read-up on Brendon Daniel last nigth after posting. Left in 2002 so not as long ago as I thought and yep played 200 or so games in the NH and then came back to BOP in 2011. I don't recall him ever playing for BOP again though?

As for dating Melodie Robinson, well, who can remember all of them??

Sorry, possibly a bit harsh on Melodie. Might have her confused with BOK 😉

I was once told she got her cans out in a spa full of ABs in Hamilton though.

@shark I just checked out that BoP Times article (I assume that was the same one you read) and the dates are confusing - he was playing England 7s in 1998 so the 2002 date seems a missprint.

He woulda had all the physical gifts that Rodders maybe didn't have as much of but apparently Rodders fitness levels were off the charts

Some older guys who retired from rugby very young - along with already mentioned Ron Jarden...

Graeme Thorne, I think he got a girl pregnant in South Africa and was only in his early 20s when he went to live there.

Bob Burgess - outstanding first five...left to study in France, also in his early 20s.

Joe Karam - a league traitor in his early 20s.

Kit Fawcett - on the scrapheap at 21 after a pretty disastrous tour of South Africa. Left NZ to play overseas.

Bevan Wilson - gone by 23 though mainly as a result of injuries.

James Somerset looked like a star until he injured his back

This is the only footage I can find of the U21 try that I remember him scoring (sorry for the quality)

Yeah but if he didn't we may have missed some class comedy from him on the box.

Or maybe he's only funny compared to Hayley Holt?

@chris-b Lawrie Knight went to France at 27 after scoring the series winning try against 77 Lions

Waka Nathan no international footy after 27 because of repeat injuries
    Has John Drake been mentioned?

    I'm impressed. That's a great individual try.

I never thought of him as a nailed on potential future star (mainly due to his size), but then I saw never much of his play as he was crocked.

Not sure if the terrible video quality makes it look even better, he is literally ghosting past defenders.

Waka Nathan was in an article a year or so back about rugby and concussion. Apparently he’s suffering the effects quite badly now of his repeated head knocks .

@jegga not wanting to disparage a legend but he really liked a beer too, which probably compounded the concussion issues.

There's also the fact that dementia can develop without concussion as well.
