The main problem is that England can only operate with pinging long balls and doing everything in fast mode. They don't seem able to move up the field by passing and moving which Croatia is rather good at. Once Croatia realised that if you press the defenders it ends up with a Pickford long ball then they started to dominate possession.
And Harry seemed to be playing deep most of game. Sure Sterling's pace bothered Croatia at times but he can't hold the ball up and bring other players in.

All I can say is Croatia had better beat France. Because seriously, fuck France.

@KiwiMurph Kane was really disappointing. This was the game he needed to step and finish some chances, but as you say he played way too deep and was basically anonymous the whole match.

Just realised Croatia only has 4 million people. How awesome would it be if they pulled this off?

I was cheering for Croatia for one reason: my hatred for the 'it's coming home' bullshit. You'd think England would have learned by now that you don't print the t shirts or the mugs or put up the billboards or make the wanky tv ads until the captain is holding up the trophy.

Pretty sure it was ironic. General feeling i got was this was a pleasant surprise for the english, a team they liked, doing well. Seems they were just proud for once

Eng getting 5th minute goal stuffed them up really. They lapsed into fap around mode too easily
Thought they played great in the first half. Kane had a sharp chance and if he'd managed to score 2-0 would have been good. Second half they seemed to lose steam, sat back and Croatia had heaps of time on the ball with little or no threat of being punished on the counter. Agree with everyone else that England has no playmaking midfielder, they haven't had a really good one since Gazza. The problem is that all of the best playmakers in the Prem are not English. Guys like Lingard, Sterling and others look great playing alongside world talents but look a little more ordinary when not

It seems to be Southgate's plan to have him play deep, this is not the first game it's been done. The trouble is, England need him up front

Watched this game this morning , first one of this WC ,
Was kind of going for England ,knowing how much it means to a few poms I know ,
but could see the funny side of it when it went to 2-1 , sport can be bloody cruel .
