England look, well, really good. Yes, Panama are shit, but because England are stretching them. Width in attack, runners behind, set piece on point. This is not tournament England we are used to.

They seem very loose at the moment, innocence of youth? Sterling was shit as usual

Hope England beat Russia in the final.
I have (Senegal Vs Japan) going in the living room. Not actively watching. That first kneed in goal was embarrassing for the Japanese, worst goalie punch ever.
    Edit: Good equaliser

They would want to hope there isn’t a Russian equivalent of Suzie .....

Polonium in the tea world be a bit of a hindrance

Given current form, i would probably take the Germany/Brazil side of the draw.

@rocky-rockbottom thing is, a lot of people would rather their club won the Champions League than their nation won the World Cup. Messi will go down as a all-time great in Spain.

Plenty of players of their generation never won a WC -- Eusebio, Puskas, Cruyff. No-one bags them.

Messi has to deal with Argentina having won one. But Kiwis can love Lomu, and how many cups did he win?

Ronaldo proves that anything Messi can do, I can do too. His penalty miss and the late VAR dramatics means that Spain plays Russia in the Rd of 16 while Portugal has a much tougher assignment against Uruguay.

Uruguay Portugual. Nice match up. Bet Ronaldo is happy he is not a defender and in the same zip code of Suarez. I think Uruguay will be tough to beat in this one.

What a dramatic last five minutes. Portugal looked to be top, they almost missed out altogether when Iran almost scored a last minute winner

Definite craziness at the end of Por v Iran. The penalty award to Iran yet was the most ludicrous use of VAR yet. It seems like the refs aren't strong enough to review when the panel tells them to but then stick with their decision. With an example like that, any ball with arm contact will be given as a pen.

Uruguay v Portugal, Suarez v Pepe, CR7 v Godin. What's not to like? Will be a super cautious game - expect ET and pens.

If it's tight don't be surprised if Luis gets his fangs out

Speaking of VAR, the Saudi 2nd penalty was a joke. Pique should also have been sent off for a two-footed tackle.

VAR TMO doesn't work in Football League or Union.

I watched the origin last night (finally) and I thought the TMO worked quite well there. I know it's had it's criticisms, but I like the fact that once it's up there, it's up to them and they clearly explain what they are seeing etc.

@majorrage In the NRL does that MTO TV audio get played in the stadium? If so it's good development, however they only have to deal aussie ref's and TMO's no language issue. In union we have an issue with English not being the TMO or refs first language and then you throw in accent to the mix.

Argentina find a way to make it into the next round. I'm not surprised

Took a full back finally putting in a good cross (that the wingers had failed to do) and a centre back with a superb finish (that the strikers had failed to do) to get Argentina through. Not sure what their strategy is but it isn't working - yet they survive and the French to play next.

What was hilarious were a couple of OZ commentators pre-game talking about how the French needed to step up and show something or else they will get done next round.

Oz needed France to win and the obvious elephant in the room was that they needed to beat Peru.

    No and no!

    @kiwipie

Normal stuff when a team is underperforming - coach is a knob / has lost the dressing room etc.

France won't be bothered about facing Argies
