@rapido @taniwharugby From memory I think Francis got injured whilst playing in that June series for England and so didn't play for the Blues after the June window - but he was still part of the Blues squad and would have/could have played if fit.

Yeah that's what the article says

@tim If it got to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Tribunal arbitral du sport), I'd expect the NZR to lose.
I'd let him go, I don't see the point in keeping him.
What would be interesting is having World Rugby responsible for insuring players on international duty, as FIFA now does.
-
Yea cant see any benefit trying to hold him to his contract refusing to allow him to play for England, would come across as petty...only thing would be if he injured himself there would need to be compensation

But there is no compensation, if you are injured on international duty, your club doesn't get compensation. It is a stupid thing to get into a battle over, I reckon NZRU would be stuffed.
-
@machpants but I think the fact he is registered as a NZer not an English player is what clouds things, meaning NZR aren't obligated to release him.
I meant if NZR agree to release him for the test then put a caveat for some compensation if injured.
A bit of a compromise that will likely be meaningless in the greater scheme...
-
As far as I know that's not true, all unions are required to release eligible players for international duties during the windows. It doesn't matter that he's playing in France, NZ or Outer Mongolia - you have to be released. Shields is eligible for both the UK and NZ under World Rugby rules, so if wither of those calls him up - and he wants to go- his club has to release him. Canes and NZRU have to. That's World Rugby rules which trump any clause he's signed in his contract. Compensation is not required by WR rules and the NZRU would be in breach of WR regs if they tried to stop him, same as if they played Owen Farrell in an international.
-
@machpants as I said 'I think'...as that's what they were saying on the radio that he is registered as a NZ player, not Samoan, Fijian or English...although all uncapped players are in some limbo then I guess
Plus, it ain't like English clubs make it easy for their Island players.
It's be funny if NZ dug thier heels in to stick a finger to them, but ultimately it ain't worth the hassle and while we owe them no favours taking the moral high ground is a better way to play it.
-
I really think the NZRU have not a leg to stand on, they have to play to WR rules. I think they won't press it cos they know they'll lose, doesn't matter if he's an NZ registered player - he has not been captured by NZ so is available for call up. He has to agree, that is where pacific islanders get shafted, their clubs say if you make yourself available we'll drop you - off the record and under the radar. Something that IRPA is desperate to stop.

Just let Sheilds go already..just in terms of a young guy coming through, just wanna get some thoughts on Shannon Frizell who is with the Highlanders quite a unit at 6β5 and 108kgs I was very impressed with this guy playing for Ta$man last year and he looked extra good against the Brumbies last weekend..maybe one for the future..?
-
@steven-harris looks a real talent. Tomorrow night he is up against another serious young talent in Papalii. That matchup should be fun to watch.
-
@kiwimurph great to see so many good young guys coming through,do you rate sheilds..?
-
@steven-harris From a Mako fan perspective, he's very interesting. Certainly got the physique and physicality to go a long way. My main concern at Super level and beyond is his mobility - but, as you say, he seemed to go well against the Brumbies and I was watching for him.
Similar dimensions to Kaino so he's worth further watching if he can demonstrate similar speed and explosiveness.
-
@chris-b Ta$man does an awesome job bringing through local players and punches well above their weight, glad from a Taniwha perspective we are not playing you guys.. especially now that Solomon Alaimalo who has signed with the Mako and will be terrorising opposition backlines..!
-
@steven-harris Alaimalo is looking like an excellent signing - as long as he doesn't get snapped up by the ABs!
Trying to get rid of Ta$man and Northland was Steve Tew's greatest failure!
-
@chris-b Alaimalo like James Lowes has a very big kick, only difference being a right footer Northland were very poor in terms of recognising his ability with the boot especially when exiting the red zone..your right about being a chance in the ABs,in my opinion heβs got more of a skill set than Ben Lam and can play wing or fullback equally well..
-
@steven-harris ya reckon? Only thing I can see he has over Lam is age. Lam is way ahead in decision making and fairly ahead in most other departments.

If Shields plays for England, I'll swallow my knob. Eddie's too good a coach to select a bloke with toasters for hands.
