Watched Tech OB v Napier OB Marist.
Napier OB Marist struggled to keep their winning run going but eventually did so with a 35-25 win, five tries to three, having to come from behind to win.
Tech led 25-21 midway through the second half, but OB Marist scored two more converted tries, the last one by Ellery Wilson was right on fulltime, the last act of the game.
The Tech scrum was well superior, loosehead Mark Braidwood was clearly better than the two tightheads he faced.
Having said that, it was the NOBM forwards who contributed more to their win. The backline did not offer much of a threat at all apart from Mitchell Drew on the left wing.
Tech had an interesting backline. JJ Taulagi scored a try and kicked two penalty goals and 2 conversions. Certainly has talent but has a quick temper which saw the referee have to calm him down a couple of times.
In the second half Tech brought on Sebastian Visinia at centre, played for Auckland Under 19 last year at the Jock Hobbs tournament. Is a big unit.
The Magpies coaches were there watching the game.

@stargazer I think I saw the name of Hika Elliot listed in an article for club rugby recently. Has he finished up in France then ?
He was listed in the tamatea squad in the paper, perhaps the journo didn't research it properly.

@Kiwidom As you can see, Hika Elliott is named in the Tamatea squad. Odd. Maybe he'll return from France, once the Top 14 season is over? Although his contract was for two seasons (including 2018-19), but you never know. With only four round robin games to go, Oyonnax is a good candidate for relegation to the Pro D2. @kiwimatrix may be right though.
No Trent Boswell-Wakefield, although I think he returned from overseas last week. I guess these line-ups aren't set in stone.

@stargazer Yeah I thought he'd signed in France for two years, so was surprised to see him listed. Maybe as mentioned it was a typo, or he will turn out for a couple of games during his 'off season'... With the number 6 on his back

Watched Hastings RS v MAC. Hastings RS won 46-13.
Selesele and Tom Iosefo did not play for MAC; Jacob Devery did not play for Hastings RS. All three are in the Magpies 52-man training squad.
Danny Toala was at first-five for Hastings. Looks to have bulked up a bit since last year. Kicked seven out of eight. Wasn't afraid to take on the line and made a couple of breaks. Didn't show much of a kicking game out of hand.
Halfback Folau Fakatava only played the final 30 minutes and looked impressive. Good pass, had the confidence to kick a couple of times - a good high ball which one of his team mates retrieved, and a good crossfield kick into the MAC 22 that bounced out. Also took on the line a couple of times - excellent variation. Also had no problem yelling at his forwards. Stick him in the Magpies behind Brad Weber this year, I reckon.
Mason Emerson scored a stunner of a try in just the second minute. Intercepted a pass in his own 22, ran 80 metres down the touchline with four MAC players coming across to try and get him. Two couldn't get near him, the third went high and just slowed him, he broke free to score in the corner in the tackle of the fourth.
The big tighthead prop Josiah Tavita-Metcalfe played the first 50 minutes at number eight. Was hard to stop when the ball was given to him, but looked better went he went into the front row. Played the whole 80, though.
Toala, Fakatava and Tavita-Metcalfe all just 19 this year in their first year out of Hastings BHS.
-
@number-10 Thanks for that; good to hear these Magpies are going well in club rugby. Isn't Devery still injured? They included 7 injured players in the wider training squad, so he could be one of them.
About Toala, Fakatava, Tevita-Metcalfe: don't you think they'll play Under 19s first this year? Before even being considered for the Magpies?

HT: 45-0Taulagi seems to be a bit of a try scoring machine in club rugby. I think he's scored almost every game he played? Often more than one try, too. And Tongia is kicking conversions and penalty goals!?!
-
@stargazer Dagg....
-
@magpie_in_aus Uhm, no. First of all, I hope he makes the ABs. Second, he never plays at 10. He knows how to kick for goal, but that's about it. I'd rather have his experience at the back.

I'm assuming no signs of Brendon Edmonds playing yet?
