I love Taika's movies, but fuck me days we need to stay far away from the celebrity opinion is THE opinion crap. Butchering the pronunciation of place names is a pretty damned weak example of racism, I have to say. If you are fluent in the language you are always going to pronounce words of that language better. It's not fucking rocket science.
-
Add in he's probably talking a lot about people of my parents generation, who flat out weren't taught Maori.
If you have called it Teaw-poe, or Teau-wrong-a, or kaddie-kat, your whole life, it's pretty hard to change. Most people of my age seem to make an effort to pronounce it correctly.
-
I thought Waititi would have observed other countries and cultures more in his travels to realise racism is a comparative issue. I certainly recall the manifestation of that hatred from Maoris to Islanders as I grew up. Then I moved abroad and saw how highly Australians thought of each other depending on how lately they'd entered the country and from where. Then I found out how much Asians despise each other. Had a Melbourne taxi driver ranting about how racist Australians are and he shut up one I pointed out that at least we didn't have a caste system...

Agreed. Correct me politely and I'll try to get it right. Be an arse about it and you'll find I like to call Mumbai Bombay still. And Zimbabwe Rhodesia, etc. But then I can be shit stirring fluffybunny like that.

Waititi is right. NZ is racist as fuck but not as racist as it was 20 years ago and NOWHERE near as racist as it was 40 years ago.
No racism is acceptable but human nature being what it is we are never going to enjoy collective colour blindness. I've certainly been to a lot of places with more blatant and institutionalised racism than here.
I think a lot of what is construed as racism is a result of the poverty trap rather than clear prejudice
-
Two things. 1) He's working for the Human Rights commission on a campaign that relies on racism being widespread for any relevance, and 2) he's now among the Hollywood elites, so ranting about widespread racism among the peasants is what the "in-crowd" do.
I'd take everything he says with a massive grain of salt, it's more about boosting his profile in Hollywood than anything else.
We covered the "Is NZ racist" in another thread on the Politics forum recently.

The most racist stuff I’ve seen in nz has been directed at Indians and people from Asia. People who I suspect would never utter a racist thing about Maori seem to feel comfortable saying awful things about the Chinese in NZ

It's because they're new. Probably hard working and wealthy too, which pisses off some people.

Which could apply to people from Newcastle for example. They might call it English, but it's clearly not the one I learnt and use.

Ha! Calls out a whole country for racism - think about that for a minute. Also Calls out Aucklanders in general.
Irony at its best.

There's over a millions people in Auckland, how did he find the time to listen to every one of them be patronising to him?
I have an alternate scenario, if the first person you meet tomorrow is an arsehole, chances are they are an arsehole, if everyone you meet is an arsehole chances are you're in fact the arsehole.
